Disney’s Frozen took the world by ice storm, making Frozen themed Outdoor Movie Nights a popular pick this year at events in parks and at elementary schools. Movies have the magic to create their own environment in the mind of the viewers, but sometimes it’s fun to add to the experience and decorate the venue to complement the film. Here at Southern Outdoor Cinema, we learned a few tricks and treats to hosting Frozen nights. Adding props, actors, and fun activities bring it to life for the audience so that they can sit back and let it go with Elsa, Anna, Sven, Kristoff, and Olaf.
Before the audience reaches their seats, you can start setting the mood by assembling a blue and white balloon arch at the venue entrance. Balloon arches are the marker of a whimsical time, and blue and white hearken to the chilly atmosphere of Frozen. Decorations are everything: Christmas trees and Christmas lights around the screen transform any open field or parking lot into a frosty retreat of movie magic. You can purchase glittery swatches of cottony, fake snow to wrap around the trunks of your trees to make them feel like they’re in a wintery forest; you could decorate around the balloon arch with it as well. To help the audience experience select moments in the film as it plays, you can rent a snow machine and blast flakes during any of the snow scenes.
If you have a concession stand at your event, use it to reflect the wintertime feel of the movie. Hot chocolate and apple cider are snowy season favorites. Carmel corn could stand in for traditional movie popcorn, and you can sprinkle it with some powdered sugar to mimic snow and add to the enchantment. If you have the budget, you could expand on powered sugar treats by offering funnel cakes at your event. Incorporate some Norwegian favorites, like lefse, to bring a bit of Norwegian-inspired Arendelle to your event. Don’t forget that you can decorate your concession stand with wintery items too! Fake snow, Christmas trees, and Christmas lights are great here as well, not just up by your screen!
Now that you’ve turned your environment into something befitting an Ice Queen, what better way to invigorate a movie than to transform the characters from Frozen into real people? Having actors dressed as Elsa and Anna at your event (maybe even Olaf and Kristoff, and if you’re ambitious and have a reindeer on hand, Sven!) is sure to be a hit. Pairing them with a photo booth—you can use cardboard standees from the movie to make one—is a great way to offer a priceless photo op for adults and kids alike. Stock your photo booth with hats, gloves, and scarves to add to the fun and the authenticity of the scene. To expand your Frozen themed activities, you can have and ice fishing game for little kids, pin the tail on the reindeer, and a snow globe creation station.
Lastly, because everyone already knows the words, encourage every to sing along during their favorite scenes. If Elsa and Anna are visiting for your outdoor movie night, they could lead everyone in a sing-a-long before the outdoor movie start.
