American Reunion Filmed in Georgia

‘American Reunion’ is the fourth installment in the theatrical ‘American Pie’ series. The film brings back all of the original characters from the first ‘American Pie’ film as they return home to attend their high school reunion. While some of the film’s characters have changed, married, started big careers and have had children, there are some who have remained exactly the same. The movie was released in 2012 and was directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg who also wrote the film’s screenplay. ‘American Reunion’ stars Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Sean William Scott, Mena Suvari, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Natasha Lyonne, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jennifer Coolidge, and Eugene Levy. Though the film is set in Michigan, it was filmed in much of metro Atlanta and other Georgia locations.

In Cumming, Georgia, the cast and crew spent time filming at Mary Alice Park on Lake Lanier. The area was used for several beach scenes in the movie. The location was picked for the fact that it closely resembled the setting one would see at a Lake Michigan beach. The production company reportedly paid 23,000 dollars for full access of the area for one week’s time. At least 100 extras were used for the scenes.

Monroe, Georgia is where the film’s setting of East Great Falls, Michigan was recreated. In the first ‘American Pie’ movie, East Great Falls, Michigan was actually recreated in the city of Los Angeles. Production of ‘American Reunion’ said that filming in Georgia was more comparable to the Midwest. In Monroe, they didn’t have to worry about cutting palm trees out of scenes. The scenes filmed in Monroe were done in the downtown area. Some roads did have to be closed during the time of filming. A corner of downtown was used to create a mural and a building exterior of the first film’s local hangout, Dog Years.

Filming for ‘American Reunion’ also took place in Covington, Georgia. For scenes involving the high school reunion, Newton High School at 1 Ram Drive in Covington was used as the location. A reunion prom set was put up in the school’s gym. The school’s football field, hallways and commons area can also be seen in the film. Roughly, 200 extras were used for the scenes completed at the high school. The production company paid 10,000 dollars to the Newton County school system for using the location.

Other filming locations for ‘American Reunion’ include warehouse space on Sigman Road in Conyers, Olde Town Conyers, and Costley Mill Park at 2455 Costley Mill Road NE in Conyers. The warehouse space on Sigman Road was also used for filming scenes of ‘Fast Five’ in 2010.

‘American Reunion’ is currently available on both Blu-ray and DVD.
