National Golf Day is a very special day celebrated by the more than 4,300 members of the PGA. It is actually a charitable event that the PGA has been sponsoring yearly since back in 1952. On this very special occasion, all PGA members are encouraged to pick up contributors and play a day of golf, donating all of the contributions to a wide range of charitable causes. There are a number of amazing movies that represent this special occasion quite well and here are a few of the favorites.
The Greatest Game Ever Played
This is a story that demonstrates the importance of perseverance and dedication even at those moments when things seem to be utterly impossible. Francis Quimet grew up in a middle class, working family in 1893 Massachusetts with a growing interest in the sport of golf. His home just so happened to be very close to the Brookline, MA Country Club, and he was eventually able to obtain a job as a Caddy there against his father’s very clear wishes. Quimet seemed to have a natural talent for the sport and honed his skills until he was considerably good at it. This was eventually noticed by the right people, and Quimet became the very first amateur to participate in the U.S. Open in 1913 . His participation wasn’t taken very seriously at first, but as the event progressed he became more of a threat than a novelty to the other participants. In a time when golf was considered to be a sport that only those from upper class families would participate in, a single middle-class young man would change the history of the sport forever.
Happy Gilmore
Adam Sandler is Billy Madison, an all too determined yet completely untalented hockey player who seems to be stuck in a rut. This seems to be fine for Happy until he finds out that his grandmother is about to lose her home to the IRS if she can’t come up an astonishing $270,000.00. It is only by sheer luck that Happy stumbles onto the fact that he has a talent for hitting a golf ball, and wins an amateur tournament that guarantees him a spot in the upcoming pro tour. But there is no way that he can win a pro tournament without help, and help is exactly what he gets from a retired old one-handed pro (Carl Weathers) and a beautiful public relations woman taken by Happy’s silly antics. The tournament begins and it’s “game on” for Happy as he will need every bit of luck to keep his grandmother in her home.
Seven Days in Utopia
After a very talented young golfer fails terribly at his very first shot at the “big times”, and at making it to the pro tour, Luke Chisolm (Lucas Black) decides to escape any further embarrassment and leaves town. The only problem is that Luke fails to plan out his escape and ends up lost in what would seem to be the middle of nowhere. Fortunately for Luke, nowhere is actually Utopia, Texas and the home of rancher Johnny Crawford (Robert Duvall). While Johnny would seem to be no more than an ordinary rancher, he is much more than meets the eye, and it is Johnny’s unusual way of putting things into perspective that puts Luke back on track, and moving towards a goal that could change his life forever.
Golf Punks
It will take all of the patience, determination, and willpower that an out-of-work golf pro can muster up to teach a group of no-talent golfers how to play the game. The fact that he was coaxed unwillingly into taking on the task to begin with, and that he must teach them how to play in a public golf course, won’t help matters one bit. One thing is for certain and that is the laughs will not be in short supply as you watch “Golf Punks”.
