5 Movies About Moms

Mother’s Day is one of the most important holidays that we celebrate simply because it celebrates our mothers, and just how important they are to us. The very first Mother’s Day was celebrated by Anna Jarvis back in 1907, and it was the beginning of what has become the American tradition of Mother’s Day. There are numerous movies that celebrate Mother’s Day but here are a few of the favorites.

Freaky Friday

There is no better way to learn about another person, and what they go through in life, than to live in their shoes for a day and that is exactly what the movie Freaky Friday is all about. This remake to Disney’s 1977 original comedy feature has high strung mother Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and “angry at life” teenager Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) switching bodies as part of a lesson that a couple of fortune cookies decide must be learned. While at a favorite Chinese restaurant for her wedding rehearsal dinner, Tess gets into an argument with Anna because Anna wants to leave the dinner early so that she can make it on time for a band audition. Only Tess feels as though Anna is just acting out because she dislikes her soon-to-be step dad Ryan (Mark Harmon) which is what leads to the heated argument, and the invasion of the body switchers routine. The only way that Tess and Anna will be able to get back into their own bodies in time for the wedding is if they can “come to a greater understanding of one another”, or so the fortune cookie’s say. And so begins the comical adventure that is Freaky Friday.

Brave

When Merida decides to go against sacred customs put in place by the lords of the land, she sets undesirable events in motion; events that could affect the kingdom for ages to come. Brave is the story of how the selfish choices made by Merida, daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) are only made worse when she goes to an old witch (Julie Walters) for answers and help. The old witch grants Merida one wish which she uses to her misfortune. It is the consequences of this wish that push Merida to understand the bravery that it will take to break an evil curse before all hope is lost, and the courage to do what it takes to be “Brave” during this all too important moment in time..

Hairspray

Hairspray is the story of Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky), a teenager with a dream of appearing on Baltimore’s local teen dance program. While Tracy’s father (Christopher Walken) supports her in all of her dreams, her mother Edna (John Travolta in drag) is constantly reminding her of her being overweight and different than everyone else on the program. It is only after showing the host of the show (James Marsden) that she has what it takes that she is given a spot on the program. This is also when her popularity begins to grow and when she ultimately becomes a threat to the daughter of the local television station operations manager (Michelle Pfeiffer). Tracy has her eyes opened to the racial issues that are going on all around her and begins a quest to integrate the races during a time when racial tensions are at their highest.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Toula (Vardalos) is a thirty something Greek-American woman who is stuck in a rut that seems to have a terribly strong grip on her. While not being able to meet the right man is okay with her, it is Toula’s mother (Lainie Kazan) and father (Michael Constantine) who seem to be horrified by the thought of their daughter never getting married. They would love to send her away to Greece to meet a nice Greek young man but Toula won’t have it. She instead decides to give herself a makeover so she takes a computer night course at the community college, gets out of the family restaurant business and begins working at a travel agency, trades in her glasses for contacts, and gives herself a totally new look. The results of the makeover are positive in that Toula meets a schoolteacher named Ian Miller (John Corbett), falls in love, and gets married (against her father’s original wishes).

Because I Said So

“Because I Said So” tells a story of how even the best intentions can bring about the worst results, and it doesn’t matter who they are coming from either. Diane Keaton is Daphne Wilder, a mother who wants only the best for her daughter Milly (Mandy Moore), and a mother who will do whatever it takes to give it to her. This includes helping her to find the perfect man by placing tactful personal ads for her daughter wherever she can. This is how intent she is on keeping Milly from making the same mistakes that she made, and on helping Milly to achieve success equal to that of her older two daughters. The only problem is that even the most well-intended mothers can go a little too far making things worse for their children as a direct result.
