Atlanta natives are craning their necks and pointing fingers as they view the film “Last Vegas,” which premiered in early November 2013.
Starring Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline, the film is, as you might have guessed from its title, set in the city of Las Vegas. So why are Atlantans so eager to see it? Though the film’s exterior shots were done in the universally recognizable city in Nevada, many of the interior shots were done in Atlanta, which is becoming a greater center for the American film industry due to a large state-tax credit available for production expenditures in Georgia.
For the bar scenes the film utilized both the lavish bar Vanquish, which is quickly becoming the place for discriminating young “it guys” and “it girls” to party the night away, and The Velvet Room, famous for its packed Saturday night.
Bars are ubiquitous in Atlanta making it no problem to find one of those for shooting, but what’s a Vegas movie without a pool scene? No problems on that front; the scenes at the pool were shot in the Bethesda Aquatic Center in Lawrenceville.
What about sets requiring not-so-public shots? Do we need to pack up and shoot those on a soundstage in Hollywood? Thanks to the work of the team at Mailing Avenue Stageworks, the answer is now a resounding “no.” Stageworks is a the creation of real estate investors John and Paul Raulet and Tyler Edgarton. It is a 85,000 square foot facility designated for use in the production of film and television. Located in the Grant Park area of downtown Atlanta, this facility has become a key player in bringing the film industry out to the east. “Last Vegas” is its biggest film to date, but you can expect to see the facility increase the shift of production companies utilizing Atlanta over Hollywood as a site to shoot their projects.
If you haven’t hit this film up yet, now is the time to do it. With four wildly popular stars of the American screen portraying characters coming to grips with the fact that they are no longer young but don’t have to think of themselves as old, the film is a great way to spend a Saturday night.
…Well, that and The Velvet Room. Seriously, check it out.
