‘The Good Lie’ is a film starring actress Reese Witherspoon. The movie is based on the true story of a Sudanese refugee who wins a lottery to come to the United States where he is taken in by a “straight-talking” American woman who helps him deal with the culture shock and the guilt he feels for leaving family behind. Ron Howard is among the producers listed on the film. ‘The Good Lie’ spent a few weeks filming in Georgia before travelling to Africa to shoot the remainder of the film.
One of the film’s Georgia locations was at the Sugarloaf Mills Mall in Lawrenceville. Actress and star Reese Witherspoon was spotted at the mall’s Athens Kouzzina restaurant where a scene was shot for the film. The owner of the restaurant said that the scene even utilized some of his employees as extras. Athens Kouzzina is a Greek restaurant located at the mall’s theater entrance #4. Some filming was done in other areas of the mall as well as in the mall’s parking lot.
‘The Good Lie’ spent about three weeks shooting in Atlanta. While the film’s star, Reese Witherspoon was in the city working on the movie back in April 2013, she created quite a bit of her own buzz. The actress and her husband were arrested after a traffic stop on Peachtree Road. Witherspoon’s husband was arrested for a DUI and Witherspoon was arrested for disorderly conduct after getting out of the vehicle when she was asked repeatedly by the officer to stay in it. The Oscar-winning actress made matters worse by asking the officer if he knew her name and at one point claiming to be pregnant. The actress later apologized for the event and admitted that she had no idea what she was saying that night and had just panicked. Not long after her public apology, a dashboard video from the officer’s car was released which only caused more attention to be focused on the actress’s arrest, which in turn, gave the film attention as well. Despite the media buzz surrounding Witherspoon’s arrest, ‘The Good Lie’ was still in motion and filmed in several Atlanta locations. Filming locations included the Peachtree Baptist Church, a factory building in Alpharetta, downtown at Marietta Street and Howell Mill Road, and a filmmaker favorite, the Georgian Terrace Hotel.
Originally, ‘The Good Lie’ was anticipated to be released in December of last year, however the film is still in post-production. It is scheduled to be released some time in 2014, but does not have a specific date slated at this time.
