Photo Props - Monsters for Movie Night

Outdoor movie events are a great special event for friends and family to have a fun time in a community setting. At an movie night event, it is a common sight to see groupings of friends huddling together on a blanket while one friend extends their arm out to take a picture with their smart phone. With a quick push of the button, their snapshot together is broadcasted out on social media for others to see.

Often, Southern Outdoor Cinema’s clients are asking us what they can offer as a pre-movie activity that is both free but full of excitement for their guests. To assist our clients with coming up with an activity, each of our movie event specialists where asked to come up with thoughts after observing movie goers at the open air movie events. Each specialist observing the same thing happening at every event – friends snapping group pictures to remember their good times. This phenomenon inspired us to enhance the picture taking experience at a movie in the park event to reflect on the theme of the movie being shown with photo props.

Last summer, Southern Outdoor Cinema’s artist began came up with photo props that could be used by young kids as well as adults. For events showing “The Lorax”, they came up with a hand held photo prop of an orange mustache, just like the Lorax character had in the film. Attendees at summer outdoor screenings of the Lorax loved the prop we came up with. Giggling friends where taking turns photographing each other with the mustache and sharing the photos with their friends on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Building off of this new pre-movie enhancement idea, this spring, Southern Outdoor Cinema will be creatively assisting our clients with other photo prop ideas specific to movie themes. By providing movie themed templates available for free download, all that is needed to make the prop is a printer, paper, tape and a stick (or chopstick).

Check out the monster mouths that we found for picture props that can be used at movie night events showing “Hotel Transylvania”. I’m sure movie goers will have a ghoulish time coming up with poses for their pictures.

Keeping your Audience Entertained Before an Outdoor Movie Event

Posted by Paul Murray on Wednesday Jun 27, 2012 Under Event Productions

Today, I want to talk to you about keeping your audience entertained before the start of your outdoor movie. One of the things you want to do is have a nice environment for your participants to attend.

Number one: consider having some music playing while people are filtering into your location. Obviously you’re going to want it to be at a relatively good volume level but not too overpowering so people can actually talk in the audience. Also the music selection is important. You don’t want it super blaring, hip-hop, or something if your crowd is sort of a laid-back crowd, or vice versa.

Number two: create an environment for the participants of your movie. You can go ahead and create some signage that tells what kind of movie it is or you can even theme the event with certain signage. Maybe consider having some balloons. Definitely want to consider possibly having greeters welcoming somebody into your event.

Number three: if this is a child or family-friendly event, consider having some activities for the children so that they’re not just sitting around for over an hour with nothing to do. Consider having some inflatables, possibly renting a local clown for a clown show or a walk around. Consider having maybe some bubble machines, or some spin art machines at your event and definitely have something for them to be doing so they’re not just sitting there. If you’re on a tight budget, consider doing some cost effective things such as maybe having games outdoor games such as tug-of-war or sack races. Those are definitely still a lot of fun when you’re trying to pinch some pennies.

If you’ve got more of an adult-themed environment that’s not as a kid-friendly film or kid-friendly environment, consider some of the things that’ll keep the adults active as well such as, you could do something like a cakewalk, or you could have up displays that they could go and peruse through the different vendors or different things for them to actually look at at the event. You could also do some silent auctions. You could do some raffles before the event. And you could also, of course, have some door prizes as well.

Number four, go ahead and consider having some sort of items on the screen before the movie starts. This could include on-screen slides, and the slides could have things like trivia. You could go ahead have some of the rules of the location up such as if you’re going to smoke, please smoke outside of the crowd where the crowd’s actually sitting. You could have trivia up you could have messages about making sure you have your cell phones turned off, things like that, as it’s getting dark, you can go ahead and display those messages up on the screen.

Pre-Movie Entertainment At An Outdoor Movie Event

Posted by Paul Murray on Friday Jun 1, 2012 Under Tips

An outdoor movie night is the perfect way to entertain families. If you have carefully chosen the movie for the event based on who will be attending, your event will almost surely be a success. What about before the movie begins, though? Guests will arrive at different times, and many will come early in order to secure a good spot. This is where pre-movie entertainment comes in.

Plan to begin pre-movie entertainment about an hour before the movie is scheduled to begin. Activities before the movie starts will keep the crowd engaged, especially young children, who are likely to grow restless while waiting. Adding entertainment to the event also enhances the experience; instead of simply coming out and seeing a movie, movie night turns into a full evening of family fun. Families heading to events like this are looking for an affordable way to have fun as a family, and keep everyone entertained; offering entertainment in addition to the movie is a great way to meet these expectations for families.

What type of entertainment should you plan for your outdoor movie night? This depends, in part, on the movie you are showing, and the demographics of the expected crowd. Bounce houses, face painting and carnival games are excellent choices for family friendly events, where children will be present. Be sure to plan ahead to ensure the success of these activities. During the summer months, especially, you will need to reserve a bounce house ahead of time to ensure availability. If you are planning to rent any special concession equipment such s a popcorn machine, be sure to reserve those items ahead of time as well.

Concessions are appropriate for any event, and many guests will want to purchase snacks before the movie begins. Popcorn is a classic movie snack, others to consider include candy, and popsicles for summer movie nights.

Consider planning themed entertainment for an especially memorable experience. If you are showing an Ice Age movie, for example, consider bringing in a snow machine.

Pre-movie entertainment is also a great way to raise some money to help cover the production costs for the movie night. You can charge reasonable prices for snacks and small fees for carnival games to keep it affordable while raising money.

Hosting a successful outdoor movie event takes careful thought and some time spent planning ahead. From choosing a movie, promoting the event, securing the equipment and preparing the venue, there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to make these seemingly simple events successful. Putting in a little bit of extra effort to plan some pre-movie entertainment is worth the additional time and planning. Entertainment will set your movie night apart from other outdoor movie events and give attending families a special night to remember.
