St. Patrick's Day: 5 Movies that Celebrate being Irish

Saint Patrick’s Day is a holiday celebrated on March 17 that is both religious and cultural by nature. It is also known as the “Feast of Saint Patrick” and was named after the actual Saint Patrick who lived from 385-461 AD. Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations typically involve festivals, parades, and the wearing of something green. There are a number of great movies that help to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day and here are just a few of them:

Luck of the Irish

“Luck of the Irish” is a movie about an American teenage boy whose mother just so happen to be a leprechaun. The only problem is that he doesn’t have a clue about his extremely unusual heritage. There doesn’t seem to be anything different about Kyle Johnson (Ryan Merriman). He is just another teenage boy who is crazy about girls, fantastic at basketball, and a genius at his school work. Then one day Kyle finds out that all of his talents may just be a whole lot of luck…Irish luck that is. And what’s worse is that Kyle soon notices that he is beginning to look like a leprechaun himself. “Luck of the Irish” is the perfect movie to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day.

The Last Leprechaun

After being sent off to Ireland to live with their father’s fiancé, Ethel and Tommy Barrick have their eyes opened up to a reality that they would never have expected. Between their new stepmother and a very scary butler, the pair have no idea who is worse but what they do know is that the evil scheme that the two are planning against their father must be stopped. It is only with the help of the housekeeper that the children are able to defeat the evil pair and begin picking up the pieces to their lives once again.

In America

In this very loosely written autobiographical script, writer/director Jim Sheridan turns things around and brings the big screen much closer to home than ever before. “In American” is a film depicting his very own life experience while immigrating to America. It focuses on Johnny, his wife Sarah, and their daughters Christy and Ariel as they sneak across the Canadian border with plans to begin a new life together in New York City. But Johnny’s plans to continue his acting career in America go completely wrong, and the family finds out very quickly that America isn’t quite the land of opportunity that they first thought it was. It will take much more work than first anticipated but Johnny and Sarah decide that their family is worth every bit of it, and do what it takes to put their life back together again.

The Guard

When two cops from different worlds are tasked with the job of going toe to toe with a big-time international drug smuggling gang, they learn all too quickly that the only way to win this war is to put their differences aside and work together. Sergeant Gerry Boyle and FBI agent Wendell Everett join forces after a fellow officer goes missing, and Boyle’s quaint little town turns into what could very well be the key to the largest drug trafficking investigation ever. “The Guard” is a tale of police corruption, drug trafficking, murder, and blackmail all wrapped up into one thrill ride of a movie.

The Departed

“The Departed” is a tale of loyalty, betrayal, and the line between the two that at times can be so fine that you are completely unaware that you have even crossed it. Set in South Boston during a time when organized crime was still controlling the streets, the police force takes one more shot at bringing a stop to an Irish mafia that has become so powerful that they have their own inside man within the South Boston police force. Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) plays a rookie cop looking to make his way to the top of the force as quickly as he can. And Collin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is the cop and inside man whose true boss is the head of the syndicate, Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). When Costigan is given the task of infiltrating Costello’s inner circle, Sullivan is given the task of exposing the informer before things get out of control. And thus begins the race to expose one another before being exposed.
