4 Movies About Presidents

Although President’s Day no longer falls on the birthday of an actual president past or present, it was originally celebrated on George Washington’s birthday which was February 22nd. The holiday originated in 1885 and continued to be celebrated as Washington’s birthday up until it was finally changed to President’s Day, and began to be celebrated on the 3rd Monday of February as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act. There are a number of different movies relating to President’s Day and each highlights a different important area of this all too important holiday.

Here is a list of a few of the favorites:

Lincoln

The movie “Lincoln” highlights the 16th president and his last few months spent leading a nation that was not only divided by war, but a nation that was right on the verge of much needed change. The president knows that he has several choices to make, and that one choice will bring the necessary changes to pass while the other will keep the nation in bondage. It is only through sheer courage and utter determination that President Lincoln is able to make the choices that bring an end to the war, unite a country once separated, and end slavery thus changing life as we know it forever.

The Ides of March

The movie “The Ides of March” brings us an up close and personal look into the final days before a presidential primary, and at just how desperate we as humans get especially when placed in positions of such power. It shows us how the battle between “good” and “evil”, and between right and wrong exist in the political world, and at just how real the threats of political scandal can be. The only question left is which will prevail in the end, and who will become the next president?

Air Force One

Harrison Ford plays James Marshall, the current president of the United States who is in the former Soviet Union showing his support for the fight against terror, and more specifically for the fight against a war criminal general who is currently sitting in a soviet prison. Everything goes as planned during the visit, and President Marshall and his team leave as scheduled. The only problem is that a few unwanted guests have gotten onboard Air Force One, and their intentions are to use the President to assist them with their plan to get the general released from prison. Tensions rise and the president, who just so happens to be a former war veteran, is forced to take matters into his own hands, but will those hands be enough to make a difference? That is a question that can only be answered by watching the movie “Air Force One”.

Olympus has Fallen

When the most secure building in the country is taken over by terrorists, it is the task of a single man (Mike Banning) to bring them down, and save the president and everyone else in the White House. But what do you do when the threat is coming from both terrorists and one of the people giving the orders that are supposed to be helping save the president? The situation seems to go from bad to worse as Banning (a former Presidential guard) is thrown from one fight into another, but it is his perseverance, and the fact that his daughter is one of the hostages inside the White House, that forces Banning to take the fight to the next level.
