Movies Filmed in Georgia: ‘Getaway’

‘Getaway’ is an action thriller starring Ethan Hawke, Selena Gomez and Jon Voight. The film was originally thought to be a remake of the 1972 Steve McQuenn film ‘The Getaway’ but it was later discovered that ‘Getaway’ is, in fact, an original story. The film follows a washed up race-car driver who finds himself pitted against the clock by a villain who has kidnapped his wife. Together with a young woman and her car, they are in a race against time. The film was released in theaters in August of 2013. ‘Getaway’ was filmed in Bulgaria for a few weeks, but the majority of the film was shot in Atlanta, Georgia.

The film’s stars seemed to cause the most buzz around Atlanta while the filming of ‘Getaway’ was going on. Both Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez were photographed frequently on-set. Actress Ashley Tisdale, who was in Atlanta shooting her film, Scary Movie 5, stopped by the set of ‘Getaway’ at one time and tweeted about stopping by the set to see her friend, Selena Gomez. All of the celebrity buzz helped to make ‘Getaway’ a popular and much talked about Atlanta activity.

The cars of the film were also heavily photographed, especially the main ‘star’ of the film, a Shelby Super Snake Mustang. Astonishingly, only two of these cars were used in the film. The rest of the vehicle body count is a lot higher. Director Courtney Solomon stated that 130 cars were used and crashed in the film. The film did not use any CGI or Green Screen effects. Everything was done with stunt drivers. So, many a car could be seen racing and crashing on the streets for the filming of the ‘Getaway’ movie.

Atlanta has become a prime location for some of Hollywood’s biggest studios to film. While ‘Getaway’ brought high-speed action and thrills to the city, there have been a variety of others who have filmed in Atlanta or that are currently filming. Some films that have already been released are ‘The Internship’, ‘Anchorman 2′ and ’42’. Upcoming films ‘Dumb and Dumber To’ and The Fast & Furious 7′ are currently filming and have both shot scenes in Atlanta. One of 2013’s biggest films, ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ brought a lot of attention to Atlanta with their scenes that they shot in the city. With the sequel, ‘Mockingjay’ returning to Atlanta, it is guaranteed that many more films will be venturing to ATL.

‘Getaway’ is currently available on DVD and Blu-ray.
