For Colored Girls Filmed in Georgia

‘For Colored Girls’ is a 2010 film that is based on a 1975 play by Ntozake Shange called, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. The film featured an ensemble cast and was written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry. Some of the cast members include, Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington and Thandie Newton. The film explores the life and struggles of nine, interconnected women of color. ‘For Colored Girls’ is set in New York City but was mainly filmed in Atlanta, Georgia.

Tyler Perry has his own production studio, Tyler Perry Studios, that is located in Atlanta, Georgia. It was established in 2006 and has been at its current location since 2008. The facility is 200,000 square feet and located on 30 acres of land in the southwest area of Atlanta. It includes five sound stages, a 400-seat theater, a back lot, a post-production facility, a private screening room, and areas designated for special events. Several of Tyler Perry’s movies have been filmed here, including ‘For Colored Girls’. Under Tyler Perry Studios is 34th Street Films, which Perry uses for non-comedies and films he doesn’t write himself. ‘For Colored Girls’ was the first film released by 34th Street Films.

‘For Colored Girls’ also filmed at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center and the Joan Glancy Memorial Hospital. The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center is located at 2800 Cobb Galleria Pkwy in northwest Atlanta. The Cobb Center is one of Atlanta’s premiere venues for concerts, Broadway shows, ballets, and operas. Corporate meetings and events are also frequently held here. The Cobb Center includes 1,000 parking spaces, a 10,000 square foot ballroom, and a 2,750-seat theater. Janet Jackson was on the set for the date scenes filmed at the Cobb Center. The Joan Glancy Memorial Hospital is located at 3215 McClure Bridge Road in Duluth. This hospital is a part of the Gwinnett Medical Center. An unused area of the Glancy campus was used for filming scenes in the movie.

The film received mostly mixed to negative reviews from critics, with a 32 percent rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website. Though the cast was generally highly praised for their performances, the production of the film received heavy criticism by some movie critics. The movie debuted at number 3 at the box office back in November 2010, with 20.1 million dollars.

‘For Colored Girls’ is available on both Blu-ray and DVD.
