Father’s Day falls on June 15th each year and is a day that is used to celebrate fathers everywhere. It is the one day out of an entire year that a father can be recognized for all of his accomplishments and appreciated for being the father that he is. Here are a few of the movie favorites perfect for watching on Father’s Day.

The Pursuit of Happiness

The Pursuit of Happiness is a true story starring Will Smith playing the role of Chris Gardner, a down on his luck single father faced with the reality of raising his son during financially difficult times. The movie is set back in the ’80s and Chris manages to get his foot in the door as an unpaid intern with one of the biggest brokerage firms in the city, Dean Witter. It is only through sheer determination that Chris works his way into a permanent paid position with the firm and eventually into owning his very own brokerage firm. Follow Chris and his son as they go from rags to riches in the inspirational true story, The Pursuit of Happiness. Playing the role of the son of Chris is the real life son of Will Smith, Jaden Smith.

Sonny Koufax (Adam Sandler) is a carefree 30 year old single guy with no responsibilities, and a $200,000.00 auto accident settlement to live off of. He works one day a week as a tollbooth attendant and spends the rest of the week goofing off, doing anything, or nothing, depending on how he feels on any given day. Sonny is fine with the entire situation until his friends start leaving him one by one, getting married and starting families of their own. When sonny’s girlfriend Vanessa (Kristy Swanson) tells him that she is tired of him acting like an irresponsible child and leaves him, Sonny decides that it is time to change his ways. Coincidentally, a little boy named Julian (Cole Sprouse and Dylan Sprouse) arrives at Sonny’s doorstep claiming to be the son of his ex-roommate and friend from back in law school, Kevin (Jon Stewart). After Julian tells Sonny a story that he knows to be untrue, Sonny decides to take advantage of the situation and use Julian to prove to Vanessa that he can be a responsible adult. He takes Julian in for the weekend pretending to be his father, and one thing leads to another creating a future for Sonny that he would never have expected to possible.

Father of the Bride

Father of the Bride is the story of a father forced to deal with the reality of losing his precious little girl to another through marriage. George Banks (Steve Martin) is a fairly happy man who is married to a wonderful woman and who has a good job as an executive. Everything seems to be going great until daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams) comes home engaged after studying in Europe for a semester. George finds it difficult enough dealing with the reality of his daughter leaving home for good as a married young woman. Things get even harder to handle when George realizes just how much the wedding is going to cost him. As things come together for the wedding, George spends the majority of his time thinking about how quickly his little girl has grown up, and how much he is really going to miss her.

-Finding Nemo

Marlin (voice by Albert Brooks) is a clown fish and father who finds himself in the middle of a desperate search for his son Nemo (voice by Alexander Gould) who he becomes separated from while swimming through the Great Barrier Reef one day. Finding Nemo is an animated underwater adventure surrounding the situation that Nemo finds himself in when he is dumped into the fish tank in the middle of a dentist office, and the determination of his father Marlin who goes through dangerous waters to get to his son. Things seem to go from bad to worse for both father and son, but this story shows just how much is possible when we put our hearts and souls into accomplishing a task.

-The Lion King

Simba (voiced by Jonathan Taylor Thomas and then by Matthew Broderick) is a lion cub prince destined to become King when his father King Mufasa (voiced by James Earl Jones) finally offers him the throne. His childhood experience is a happy one right up until the moment that his evil uncle Scar (voiced by Jeremy Irons) murders his father and forces Simba to leave the kingdom. Things seem hopeless for Simba until he finds the most unlikely pair of would-be friends possible, Pumbaa the warthog (voiced by Ernie Sabella) and Timon the meerkat (voiced by Nathan Lane), and it is this pair of true friends who helps Simba survive childhood peacefully in the jungle. The spirit of Simba’s father visits him before he reaches adulthood telling Simba that he must defeat Scar and take back the throne that is rightfully his. In a visually stimulating, action packed climax, Simba does what he must do to become the Lion King that he was truly meant to be.
