5 Movies to Watch During Black History Month

Black History Month is a time to remember important events in Black history and to celebrate important people and achievements. There are a variety of great films to choose from that are inspirational, emotional, entertaining and sometimes eye-opening. These five films are all excellent choices to watch and celebrate Black History Month.

1. The Blind Side

The Blind Side is a partly biographical film based on the life of Michael Oher, an NFL player. The film tells the story of his difficult childhood, and his life with the white family that later takes him in. He begins playing football in high school and eventually gets recruited to play for the University of Mississippi. The is an emotionally powerful film that tells the story of a strong and successful black man and those who care about him.

2. The Express

The Express tells the story of Ernie Davis, the first black man to win the Heisman trophy. Ernie Davis is recruited by Syracuse university and is immediately successful. Following a successful tenure at Syracuse University, Davis wins the Heisman trophy and goes on to the NFL. Sadly, he dies at the very young age of 23 from leukemia. Throughout the film Ernie Davis faces the discrimination and hate that was so prevalent at the time; like when he and other black players were not welcome at the award banquet following the team’s win at the Cotton Bowl Classic.

3. Glory

Glory is a war film that features the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. This unit was the first Army unit comprised completely of black men. The film follows this unit’s experiences during the Civil War. Their Captain, Robert Shaw, was instrumental in the success of the unit and insisted that his men be deployed to combat situations.

4. Glory Road

Glory Road chronicles another first in American sports history. This film tells the story of the Texas Western College 1966 men’s basketball team. This team was the first college basketball team with an entirely black starting line up to win the NCAA Division l Basketball Championship.

5. The Great Debaters

is a powerful film based on a debate team at Wiley College during the 1930’s. The film chronicles the debate team coach’s efforts to lead his debate team to success in an environment of extreme hate and violence. Jim Crow laws and lynching were a major part of this time period. In the film the team beats Harvard in a debate; a monumental success.
