For Colored Girls Filmed in Georgia

‘For Colored Girls’ is a 2010 film that is based on a 1975 play by Ntozake Shange called, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. The film featured an ensemble cast and was written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry. Some of the cast members include, Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington and Thandie Newton. The film explores the life and struggles of nine, interconnected women of color. ‘For Colored Girls’ is set in New York City but was mainly filmed in Atlanta, Georgia.

Tyler Perry has his own production studio, Tyler Perry Studios, that is located in Atlanta, Georgia. It was established in 2006 and has been at its current location since 2008. The facility is 200,000 square feet and located on 30 acres of land in the southwest area of Atlanta. It includes five sound stages, a 400-seat theater, a back lot, a post-production facility, a private screening room, and areas designated for special events. Several of Tyler Perry’s movies have been filmed here, including ‘For Colored Girls’. Under Tyler Perry Studios is 34th Street Films, which Perry uses for non-comedies and films he doesn’t write himself. ‘For Colored Girls’ was the first film released by 34th Street Films.

‘For Colored Girls’ also filmed at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center and the Joan Glancy Memorial Hospital. The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center is located at 2800 Cobb Galleria Pkwy in northwest Atlanta. The Cobb Center is one of Atlanta’s premiere venues for concerts, Broadway shows, ballets, and operas. Corporate meetings and events are also frequently held here. The Cobb Center includes 1,000 parking spaces, a 10,000 square foot ballroom, and a 2,750-seat theater. Janet Jackson was on the set for the date scenes filmed at the Cobb Center. The Joan Glancy Memorial Hospital is located at 3215 McClure Bridge Road in Duluth. This hospital is a part of the Gwinnett Medical Center. An unused area of the Glancy campus was used for filming scenes in the movie.

The film received mostly mixed to negative reviews from critics, with a 32 percent rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website. Though the cast was generally highly praised for their performances, the production of the film received heavy criticism by some movie critics. The movie debuted at number 3 at the box office back in November 2010, with 20.1 million dollars.

‘For Colored Girls’ is available on both Blu-ray and DVD.

The Scariest Outdoor Movie Experience Ever

Posted by Paul Murray on Tuesday Sep 9, 2014 Under Event Productions

The Scariest Outdoor Movie Experience Ever

Picture the sun setting on the bay as boaters and kayakers gather together for a fun filled evening while watching an outdoor movie with friends and family. The feature film was “Jaws.” They, like most of us, have seen this movie time and again, but it seemed like fun to watch once again. Everything was perfect until the sun went down and these guests found themselves right in the middle of the action. It was the scariest outdoor movie experience ever.

The stage was set for this unexpected turn of events by placing an inflatable outdoor movie screen on a helicopter barge. The barge was placed in the bay where all the boaters could get a good view of the main attraction. The other outdoor cinema equipment was boated out into the water along with a generator. The plan was to show the movie “Jaws” to all of the people who were coming. The outcome of the evening just goes to show how the location of an outdoor movie can make all the difference in the world.

As the day was coming to a close, boaters and kayakers began to arrive. Each was positioning themselves where they would be able to kick back and relax while enjoying the show. All were encouraged to have a great time and enjoy the water while watching. The sunset was beautiful as the theme song from “Jaws” began to play across the bay. The music grew in intensity and rumbled across the water in an eerie sort of way that truly began to set the scene for what guests could expect.

Boaters getting ready for a boat-in movie

Watching this well-known film took on a whole new meaning that evening. As everyone watched the movie unfold, they became very aware of being in the water themselves. The music continued to set everyone just a bit on edge. As the movie played on, it finally reached the intense shark scenes that it is so famous for. That’s when the thrills began.

A swimmer strapped on a shark fin while no one was paying attention and got in the water. They waited patiently for those terrifying scenes where Jaws comes exploding up out of the water towards the characters in film. This is when the swimmer made his rounds, scaring unsuspecting boaters as they noticed the fin circling about. Guests were left with the feeling that they had just been thrown into the movie itself.

As with any good scare, all were left laughing at themselves for how they reacted to the stunt. Friends and family teased one another, and everyone had a whopping tail to tell when they got home. By the end of the evening, all agreed that this was the scariest outdoor movie experience ever.

‘Life as We Know It’ Filmed in Georgia

Life As We Know It Filmed in Georgia

The romantic comedy-drama, ‘Life as We Know It’ was released in 2010 and stars Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel. The movie is about two people, Holly and Eric, who were set up on a blind date by their best friends and end up hating each other almost instantly. After a few years, and after their best friends marry and have a child, the friends are killed in a car crash. Unbeknownst to Holly and Eric, they were named joint guardians of their friends’ daughter, Sophie. Putting their differences aside, the two move into Sophie’s home to take care of her. ‘Life as We Know It’ was both set in and filmed in Georgia.

In the film, both Holly and Eric have jobs that are frequently showcased throughout the movie. Holly owns a bakery called, Fraiche, in the film. The set for this bakery was at the Belly General Store at 772 North Highland Ave, which is northeast of downtown Atlanta. The production crew did have to make some changes to the store for filming purposes, but the owner was very flexible and allowed them to do what they needed. Eric’s job in the film is as a television technical sports director for the Atlanta Seahawks. The production company had been prepared to build a set to depict Eric’s job location, but Turner Broadcasting System, Inc allowed them to film at their location. Turner Broadcasting System, Inc is located at 1050 Techwood Dr in Atlanta. Filming was done in a production booth that included switchboards and monitors, among other production booth amenities, that allowed for a realistic setting. The NBA also stepped in and allowed real footage from a Seahawks game at Phillips Arena to be shot and used in the film. They also allowed access to the arena when it was empty, where they shot a pivotal scene for the character, Eric.

Some filming was also done in Norcross, Georgia and in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. The wealthy, Atlanta neighborhood was the setting for the home of Sophie. This is the home Holly and Eric later move into in order to take care of Sophie. Several movies have used homes in Buckhead for filming locations, including ‘The Blind Side’ and ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’. The location is often used due to the spacious homes that allow for cameras and crews to easily get around.

‘Life as We Know It’ is currently available on Blu-Ray and DVD.

The Safest Halloween Event For Kids – An Outdoor Movie In the Park

Posted by Paul Murray on Wednesday Sep 3, 2014 Under Tips

The Safest Halloween Event

As Halloween approaches, it is important to parents that their kids have safe events and activities to go to. Fears have increased over trick-or-treating with today’s dangers that are involved. Many adults worry about the children being unsupervised, being out after dark, and allowing them to take treats from strangers. Local churches and community organizations have been working on finding safe alternatives to the traditional Halloween activities. Planning a fun filled event with plenty of fall activities would give the children an enjoyable experience, and the parents could have peace of mind.

Organizations and church groups looking for a fun way to do this should consider having a fall or Halloween themed outdoor movie event for families. Children look forward to this fun filled evening while the parents can relish the fact that their kids will be avoiding the dangers associated with traditional trick-or-treating and other Halloween activities.

A successful outdoor Halloween movie event only requires a family friendly movie and lots of terrific games to play. The church or local organization could get the evening started with some fall crafts, bobbing for apples, face painting, and maybe tractor rides. The kids could all come in costume so that they won’t feel left out of this particular tradition. Making a contest out of it adds to the joy. Carnival rides could be brought in, and local vendors could sell food and snacks. The more people that are involved, the more it will become a community celebration. Volunteers could help out with all the booths. Small favors and candy make excellent prizes, and it makes the games even more exciting to the little ones. They also get to benefit from the seasonal candy without the fear of where it came from.

The residents of Woodstock, Georgia have made their own Halloween tradition of an annual outdoor movie event each fall. It brings out many families each year, and it has grown to include 20 vendors, local business, and several area churches. The outdoor movie is held in the downtown park with food and strolling entertainers as well as all the other activities. They continue to prove that this is an excellent alternative to more dangerous activities at this time of year.

When organizing a halloween-alternative outdoor movie event, the main film needs to be appealing for all ages so that the parents can enjoy it along with their children. Something like “Monsters Inc would be ideal. Monster themed films are good too, as long as they aren’t the really scary thrill type of film. A great way to make sure it appeals to many people is to ask the community to help choose. This also gets more individuals involved. Watching whatever selection the organizers pick will be the perfect ending to the day’s events. After all the fun and play, everyone can sit back and relax with their friends and family while watching the movie together.

A safe Halloween alternative such as this is the perfect solution for concerned parents and their children. Everyone will be able to experience a stress free, simply good time with their neighbors and family. The addition of the outdoor movie to the event will make this fall activity a memorable one that families will want to experience year after year.
