5 Movies to Watch While Getting Ready for the World Series

Movies About Baseball

The World Series is the championship series of the North American – Major League Baseball (MLB) Association, played annually between the best of the American League and the best of the National League. There are quite a few great movies perfect to watch when getting ready for the World Series and here are 5 favorites.

Field of Dreams

Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) is the owner of a cornfield in Iowa, who finds himself building a baseball diamond smack dab in the middle of it. “If you build it, he will come.” seems to be something that Ray is hearing quite often these days, which is what leads him to build the baseball diamond in the first place. Once the diamond is completed, Ray is visited by the ghost of former ballplayer Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta), who graciously plays a few games with Ray on his new field. Ray first believes that the “he” in that all too familiar phrase is Joe, but he soon realizes that there is more to it than that. Ray begins hearing an additional phrase being “Ease his pain.” which is what leads him to the conclusion that the new baseball diamond, in the middle of his cornfield, is there as a second chance for ballplayers who have had to make sacrifices throughout their lifetime. Players who gave up their passion for the game, in order to take on careers that would serve those around them, are approached by Ray and brought to the field to have another chance at enjoying the one thing that truly made them happy, baseball. Ray also realizes that the final individual needing a second chance is more a part of his life than he expected.

Angels in the Outfield

When Roger (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is left at an orphanage by his father, and told that he will only return if the baseball team that Roger loves the most, the California Angels, is able to win the pennant, Roger is forced to take desperate measures. You see, the Angels are currently in last place and only a miracle will get them into a winning position. Roger prays for help and help arrives as a real angel named Al (Christopher Lloyd). Al lets Roger know that his prayers were heard, and that he and his Angel associates are there to get the losing team to the playoffs. Al also tells Roger that he cannot tell anyone about their assistance, but only after Roger slips the information to the always angry manager of the team (Danny Glover). Watch as the presence of real live angels not only gets a losing team into a position to win the pennant, but gives Roger a new outlook on what having a father in his life really means.

The Rookie

The Rookie is the story of Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid), a pitcher in the great state of Texas whose dreams are crushed after he suffers a very bad shoulder injury. Jim has since settled for working an average job teaching science to high school kids, coaching the high school baseball team and has married Lorri (Rachel Griffiths), his long time sweetheart. After going through corrective surgery, Jim comes to realize that he can now pitch the ball faster than he has ever been able to pitch it before. The high school baseball team goes through a fairly bad losing streak which is what leads them to the deal that they make with coach Morris. The deal states that Jim will give pro baseball one more try if the team is able to make it to the district championships. When the team miraculously gets to the championships, Jim is forced to keep up his end of the deal and shows up for tryouts. Nobody takes his being there seriously, but after throwing a number of fastballs clocked at almost 100 mph, Jim gets everyone’s attention and begins living his dream once again.

Bad News Bears

Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau) is an experienced pool cleaner, but not so experienced baseball player, who finds himself with the responsibility of coaching a little league team. What Morris soon realizes is that this group of miniature misfits is going to be the biggest challenge of his life. Since catching a break, and being able to play a team equal in talentless abilities, doesn’t seem to be in their future, Morris is forced to pull out the big guns. He brings two new players to the team who have the ability to change the outcome of the games that they play for the remainder of the season. Amanda (Tatum O’Neal) is a tomboy and the daughter of his ex-girlfriend, and Kelly (Jackie Earle Haley) is a talented athlete with a bad habit of smoking cigarettes and getting into trouble. With the teams two new additions, the Bears are able to break their terrible losing streak and make it to the championships where they meet up with the Yankees, the one team that they had hoped never to have to meet again.

The Natural

Robert Redford stars as Roy Hobbs, a young country boy with a talent for the game of baseball. Roy decides to take a chance on himself and grabs his baseball bat with the intent on making it to the city and in turn, to the big leagues. He draws the attention of certain individuals and is distracted from his goal when he meets Harriet Bird (Barbara Hershey) on his way to the city. Harriet invites Roy to a hotel room where he survives being shot in cold blood by the mysterious woman. Now fast forward 16 years to a much older and wiser Roy Hobbs. Roy is now 35 years old and still loves the game. He is also just as good at it and once again, Roy attracts the attention of a few individuals important to the game of baseball. He manages to make it to the starting lineup of the New York Knights, and quickly becomes the best player on the entire team. Roy is given the second chance that many others never see, and takes the opportunity to make up for his list of bad mistakes in life.

Wanderlust Filmed in Georgia

Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd star in the 2012 comedy, ‘Wanderlust’. The film is about a New York couple, played by Aniston and Rudd, who are looking to escape the city after their life has taken a sudden change. After they both become unemployed and no longer able to afford their New York City apartment, the couple heads to Georgia where they come across a hippie commune called, Elysium. At first, the couple hesitates to indulge in the commune, but after spending time with the relative they were supposed to stay with, they decide to give it a chance. The screenplay was written by Ken Marino and David Wain. Marino was also a screenwriter on the films, ‘Role Models’ (which also starred Rudd) and ‘We’re the Millers’ (which also starred Aniston). The film was directed by Wain, who also directed Rudd in ‘Role Models’. Much of the film is set in Georgia, and besides some scenes completed in New York, most of the movie was filmed in Georgia, as well.

In Clarkesville, Georgia, the cast and crew of ‘Wanderlust’ spent some time filming scenes for the movie back in 2010. The hippie commune, Elysium, that Aniston’s and Rudd’s characters come across in the movie, was portrayed by an area in Clarkesville. The set was closed to the public, but reports have the location at 340 Woodlane Lane. The film set and the base camp were located near the North Habersham Middle School. Signs were posted around the area that said “Elysium” and included arrows pointing towards the set. In an interview, Jennifer Aniston had stated that she enjoyed filming in the area and felt like being in the rural town gave her a sense of anonymity back.

Other filming locations for ‘Wanderlust’ include Marlowe Farms at 3750 George Williams Road in Monroe. There was also a scene filmed at the lobby of the building at 191 Peachtree Tower in Atlanta. In Lawrenceville, there was filming done at 2160 Breckenridge Blvd and at Gwinnett Diner at 257 Scenic Hwy. Also, in Lawrenceville, scenes were filmed at a subdivision called Miramonte Way that is off of Ozora Road.

‘Wanderlust’ did not meet favorable reviews by most critics. It received a 59 percent rating on the Rotten Tomatoes site. The film also did not perform very well at the box office. It was considered a flop, with a domestic gross of under 18 million dollars. The film’s budget was 35 million dollars.

‘Wanderlust’ also stars Alan Alda, Justin Theroux, Malin Akerman and Joe Lo Truglio. It is currently available on both Blu-ray and DVD.

5 Movies to Watch on the First Day of Fall

Posted by Paul Murray on Monday Sep 22, 2014 Under Movie Articles

Movies About Autumn

The fall season is brought in by the autumnal equinox and in 2014, this will occur late in the evening on September 22nd making September 23, 2014 the first full day of fall. There are a number of great movies to bring in the fall season and here are just a few of them.

Charlotte’s Web

Fern Arable (Dakota Fanning) is a farmer’s daughter who spends most of her free time with the animals on the family farm. She loves animals and when one of the sows on the farm gives birth to a bunch of little piglets, she is given the opportunity to raise the runt of the litter and she names him Wilbur (it’s either raise the homely little pig or allow it to be disposed of). However, as Wilbur begins to get bigger, Fern’s father (Kevin Anderson) decides to place him in the care of a neighboring farmer by the name of Homer Zuckerman (Gary Basaraba). Wilbur quickly makes friends with the rest of the animals on Zuckerman’s farm who come to realize that unless they come up with a plan, Wilbur will end up being the next meal on someone’s dinner table. A friendly spider on the farm, named Charlotte, comes up with a plan that includes weaving messages into her webs that include cute little words about Wilbur (the first word being “terrific”). As the rest of the farm animals join in on the plan, Wilbur becomes a celebrity in town, which is exactly what he needs if he is going to stay alive.

Babe

Babe is the story of a pig turned sheep dog (or if you prefer, sheep pig) who made the decision to learn how to herd sheep in order to stay off of the dinner table. You see, babe is separated from his family soon after he is born, and ends up on a nearby sheep farm. He is taken in by a friendly dog on the farm and it doesn’t take Babe long to learn the ultimate fate of pigs. This is when Babe puts together his plan to become more useful on the farm, and what better way to make use of oneself on a sheep farm than to learn how to herd sheep. Despite doubts from the rest of the animals on the farm, Babe soon becomes one of the best sheep dogs (or sheep pigs) in town.

The Horse Whisperer

The Horse Whisperer helps to explain the connection between people and their pets even if that pet is a full grown horse. Grace Maclean (Scarlett Johansson) decides to go horseback riding with her best friend Judith one morning, and her life is changed forever. While enjoying the ride on this particular winter morning, the girl’s horses slip on some ice and end up on the road where a tractor trailer jackknifes and kills Judith and her horse. Grace and her horse are not left unharmed as Grace loses her right leg and her horse, Pilgrim, remains traumatized from the incident. Grace’s mother Annie Maclean (Kristin Scott Thomas) is a successful magazine editor who feels it necessary to take time off of work to focus on helping her daughter, and Pilgrim, to move on. She packs the family up and moves everyone to Montana for a change of scenery, and to seek help from horse whisperer Tom Booker (Robert Redford). Annie hears about Tom, and his gift, and decides that he just might be able to help his daughter and Pilgrim to move past the accident. This is where recovery begins not only for Pilgrim, but for a 14 year old girl who experiences how strong the connection can be between a girl and her best friend, even if that friend is a horse.

American Harvest

Wayne Rogers and Earl Holliman are neighboring farmers, in Kansas, living through a family feud that began a very long time ago. The two families haven’t had a problem staying angry with each other, and avoiding one another, since the feud began, but things are about to change. You see, Wayne is in danger of losing his entire wheat farm, and the only way to avoid the situation is to patch things up with neighboring farmer Earl. The two men do a great job avoiding each other until the silliness begins to affect their lives in a very real way.

Old Yeller

Old Yeller is the story of a family in 1869 Texas, during a time when cattle were a very important part of the livelihood of ranchers in the area. 15 year old Travis Coates (Tommy Kirk) is left to handle managing things on the family farm while dad (Fess Parker) is away on a cattle drive. Travis’s younger brother, Arliss (Kevin Corcoran), is placed under his care and decides to bring in a stray dog while dad is away. Travis doesn’t like the idea at first, but quickly falls in love with Yeller. The fact that the dog is a great watchdog helps make it easier for dad to accept him when he gets back from his cattle drive. An unfortunate accident, with a bite from a mad wolf, leaves Yeller with rabies and although everything looks to be fine at first, the dog soon begins to become dangerous. Everyone knows that Yeller must be put down and what would be a very sad ending to a great movie is saved when Dad has a heart-to-heart talk with Travis and the family adopts a new puppy.

‘Contagion’ Filmed in Georgia

Posted by Paul Murray on Thursday Sep 18, 2014 Under Georgia Film Industry

Contagion Filmed in Georgia

‘Contagion’ is a 2011 thriller that was directed by Steven Soderbergh. (‘Erin Brokovich’ and ‘Magic Mike’ are just two of his many other credits). The film uses a multi-narrative style to tell the story of a highly lethal virus that has become a pandemic. The film follows health officials and medical researchers as they face the challenge of getting the virus under control, and fight to create a vaccine. The film also follows various characters who have been affected by the virus. ‘Contagion’ includes a slew of A-list actors in its ensemble cast, including, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotilliard, Bryan Cranston, and Jude Law. There were multiple filming locations for the movie, including some time spent filming in and around Atlanta, Georgia.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention plays a big role in ‘Contagion’, as the team of Doctors who are trying to contain the disease work out of the building. The production company was actually able to film at the real Center for Disease Control and Prevention, (the CDC,) which is located in the Druid Hills area of Atlanta. The CDC is a highly restricted area, so only the exterior of the building could be accessed and used for shots in the movie. The parking garage and the reception area for the CDC’s onsite museum can also be seen in the movie. Several extras were used for shooting at the CDC, especially for a scene that included a mob of panicked citizens outside of the building. Some of Georgia’s National Guard members were used for this scene as well. They were used along with police officers to hold back the concerned, protesting crowd. Fake tv reporters and military vehicles also littered the set for this scene. Actor, Laurence Fishburne was on hand for many of the scenes shot at the CDC. Many onlookers who were there when Fishburne was shooting his scenes were able to catch some of the action. While filming at the CDC, roads had to be closed off which caused traffic issues in the area.

Some filming also took place in downtown Atlanta while the cast and crew of ‘Contagion’ were in Georgia.

‘Contagion’ debuted at number one at the box office on its opening weekend. The film was met with mostly positive reviews by both critics and audiences. The science of the film was also praised for being a relatively accurate portrayal.

‘Contagion’ is currently available on both Blu-ray and DVD.

What You Need To Know Before Planning A Fall Outdoor Movie Event.

Posted by Paul Murray on Wednesday Sep 17, 2014 Under Tips

Fall is an excellent time of year for an outdoor movie.

Even though summer is over, the outdoor fun doesn’t have to come to an end. Fall is a wonderful time of year to host an outdoor movie event. These events can make any school function or fall festival a memorable occasion. With a little special planning, this outdoor movie can be just as fun and comfortable as a summer event.

Set the Scene for Fall

As the host, you can take full advantage of the smell of autumn air by giving everyone in your community a reason to come out and enjoy it along with the beautiful view of the colored leaves. Hay bales serve double duty as both extra seating and the perfect harvest time decoration. Don’t forget to use the in season apples and pumpkins to create points of interest or to simply scatter about for effect.

Keep Everyone Warm and Comfortable

No one’s going to enjoy themselves if they are more focused on staying warm then watching the movie. Because the days are still quite warm, you as the event planner may not have thought about how autumn nights will affect your outdoor movie night and your guest’s viewing experience.

Once the sun goes down and it’s dark outside, the ground can become hard and cold. Temperatures will continue to drop as the evening progresses. You also have a better chance of the ground becoming wet during fall nights than you do during the summer. Unless you’re prepared, this can turn your outdoor movie event into a wet and cold viewing experience. This is when the children will begin to fuss, making it hard for families to enjoy themselves.

Fall outdoor movie planning

Timing is Everything

While your guests will bring along their blankets, coats, and gloves to the event, the chill of the night can overcome them. This makes it uncomfortable for them to watch a movie on into the night. You can help prevent this by choosing to have your movie event earlier in the evening.

When picking an equipment provider for your movie night, it is important to know what time the main feature will start. A majority of equipment providers, especially those who are DJs, cannot start projecting your movie onto their inflatable screens until it is completely dark out.

Choose a Professional Company

A professional company like Southern Outdoor Cinema can start pre-movie projection at least 40 to 60 minutes before dark with the actual main attraction beginning right at sundown. Having a head start on the evening in this way will place the majority of the outdoor movie event in the earlier evening hours when it is still a bit warmer and more comfortable. This makes for a more enjoyable experience for your guests.

With just a little careful planning, you will have created a fun and memorable fall experience that your guests will remember for years to come.
