One Missed Call Filmed in Georgia

‘One Missed Call’ is a 2008 supernatural, horror film starring Edward Burns and Shannyn Sossamon (‘A Knight’s Tale’). The film is a remake of Takashi Miike’s 2003 Japanese film, ‘Chakushin Ari’. Miike’s film was based on the novel that was also called, Chakushin Ari, by Yasushi Akimoto. The film centers around the character, Beth, as she witnesses the deaths of her friends after they receive a phone call that details the date and time of their death. Beth joins Det. Jack Andrews in a race against time to figure out the mystery behind the phone calls and the deaths. ‘One Missed Call’ was filmed in Georgia.

One of the filming locations for ‘One Missed Call’ was at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Georgia Tech is located on North Ave, Northwest Atlanta. The university is one of the top colleges for research in the United States. They are a science and technology-focused school. Georgia Tech has been frequently ranked in the top ten for best public universities in the United States. While filming ‘One Missed Call’, several Georgia Tech locations were used. Scenes were filmed at the school’s library, at Tech Square and at the Skiles classroom building. There were shots filmed outside of St. Charles Deli, which is located on the campus. Also, a scene that involved an explosion was done outside of a coffee shop that was near the campus.

Filming took place at other Atlanta locations, mostly in midtown. At one point, the base camp for the cast and crew was located on the corner of Peachtree Center and JW Dobbs. On North Ave, an empty house was used for a scene as well as an apartment off of 9th street. A Victorian home located in Inman Park off of Euclid Ave was the setting for a few scenes in the film as well. It was also said by one of the film’s stand-in actors, that filming took place at the English Avenue School, where it stood in as a hospital. Some of the scenes for the hospital set involved staging a fire. The set was filled with smoke and dust to get the right effects of a fire. A scene in the film that involves some of the characters to go through a crawl space was filmed here as well. The art department created a make-shift crawl space for this scene.

‘One Missed Call’ was released on January 4, 2008 and is currently available on Blu-Ray and DVD.

#1 Rule For Showing Movies Outdoors In Public

Posted by Paul Murray on Thursday Aug 28, 2014 Under Tips

First Rule to showing movies outdoors

The Hollywood movie making industry is a multi-billion dollar a year business. Most of these big screen productions are shown in a cinema or movie theater. However, there are a growing number of outdoor movie events that are occurring all over the country in part due to inflatable movie screen rentals. There is nothing like enjoying a great movie from the comfort of your vehicle or blanket and under an open sky. Movies in the Park events planning and the acquiring of required movie licensing due to copyright laws.

To host a movie outdoors whether it be on your own portable blow up screen or through an equipment rental company, there are rules and movie licenses that have to be addressed. There are many myths surrounding the subject of showing films outside at a private event. One of these myths is that the film studio do not have time to check up on such matters. The truth is that the introduction of the internet and social media make it easier for Hollywood Studios to track illegal showings of their materials. Films being shown need to pay a licensing fee to the movie studio. A professional outdoor movie event equipment provider is the answer to this dilemma.

The second myth is that you can just pretend as if you did not know about the copyright law concerning the licensing and fees. This matter can result in hefty fines of up to $250,000.00 or up to five years in jail. If the licensing company or the studio can prove that the infringement was intentional and willful, this is a hefty trip to the snack bar of the theater. This is a mighty fine to endure for the lack of paying a fee or acquiring a license to show a film. This simple act of ignorance is a poor excuse for copyright infringement when it comes to the opinions of the FBI and the movie studios. The FBI has created a warning that is displayed at the beginning of every movie, stating the consequences of not complying with the laws. No excuses are accepted.

The big movie companies make enough money and will not miss the money from an illegal showing, is another myth that surrounds the screening of outdoor movies. An opinion that is shared by people is that movie studios have enough money and will not miss it. They are huge and uncaring so they can afford to have some of their movies shown without receiving payment for them. The truth is that the monies paid to the film industry help to ensure that there will be future works available for the public to view. The performers and workers involved in the production and development of these movies deserve to be paid for their great work. A professional outdoor cinema or a/v rental company can best handle paying the fees and acquiring the licenses needed for your special outdoor event.

To successfully hold a public movie viewing event without having to pay these fees and acquire the licensing, it is necessary to meet certain criteria. To show a production of a movie in a setting such as a church, a restaurant, or a school, there are parameters that must be met. To show a movie in a school and be exempt from obtaining a movie license

  1. There must be a teacher present at all times during the viewing of the film.
  2. The film must be shown in a classroom type setting.
  3. The current school curriculum must be part of the movie being viewed.

If all of these parameters are met, the organization will be allowed to view the movie without the cost of the licenses and fees associated with the copyright.

Perhaps the most important reason for paying the licensing fees when operating an outdoor theater is the performers and the art itself. These people who have worked all of their lives to be seen on the big screen are just people like you and I. They have personal lives and families. They have bills and worries just like everyone else. They too deserve the paycheck that they earn by creating some of the best cinema ever. Their jobs are very demanding and often keep them away from their homes and families for long periods of time to create these unforgettable films.

Events showing flicks outdoors have been around for a great number of years, and they are still held accountable for the fees and costs associated with the showing of a film. Whether your event is a neighborhood get-together, a non-profit fundraiser, or a free public event, the requirements are the same. There are no exceptions when it comes to the seriousness of the need for licenses and paying the fees associated with outdoor movie theater productions. Hire Southern Outdoor Cinema to produce your special event and they will help to secure the licensing for your movie showing. Do so and your mind will be free and clear to enjoy your movie under the open sky.

Filmed In Georgia - Sweet Home Alabama

In 2002, the romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, was released in theaters. The movie is about a southern woman who runs from her husband and her life in Alabama and recreates herself as a New York City socialite. Several years later, she gets engaged and finds herself having to go back home to get her husband to sign divorce papers. Once she is back home, she finds that life in the south may be better than city life after all. ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ also stars Patrick Dempsey, Josh Lucas and Candice Bergen. Even though, as the title indicates, the setting of the film is Alabama, most of the filming was done at various locations in Georgia.

In Rome, Georgia, a mansion was used for scenes in the movie. In the film, Reese Witherspoon’s character, Melanie, pretends that this mansion belongs to her family. The mansion that the movie used during filming is called Oak Hill and it resides at Berry College. Oak Hill is now a museum, but it once belonged to the founder of Berry College, Martha Berry.

The International Horse Park in Conyers, Georgia was used in the movie during a scene that involved the characters doing a Civil War re-enactment. The International Horse Park opened in 1995 and was used for all of the equestrian events during the 1996 Olympic games.

While filming ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ in Atlanta, scenes were shot at a loft located in downtown’s Hastings Seed Lofts at 434 NW Marietta Street. Some scenes were also filmed in the Castleberry neighborhood on the SW edge of central Atlanta.

Lake Peachtree in Peachtree City was the location where one of the characters lands a plane in the film. It is actually illegal to land a plane there, so the film company was ticketed $300 for the violation.

In Crawfordville, a very small town with a population just over 500, the Taliaferro County Courthouse was used during one of the film’s scenes. There is also a scene in the film where Main Street is featured as Witherspoon’s character walks down it.

Other filming locations for ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ were at one of the plantation homes located in Covington, as well as at Starr’s Mill in Fayette County. Starr’s Mill is seen in the film as the character, Jake’s (played by Josh Lucas) glassblowing shop. For the movie, the property’s exterior was repainted and its porch was rebuilt.

‘Sweet Home Alabama’ is currently available on both DVD and Blu-ray.

4 Keys To Creating A Memorable Outdoor Movie Experience

Posted by Paul Murray on Wednesday Aug 20, 2014 Under Tips

Memorable Outdoor Movie

You’re planning a movie night for your school, church or organization that will be outdoors and under the stars. You’re not an event planner, but you want to but you want your event to be successful and fun. After all you are putting your time and effort into the event and you want it to reflect well on you. Who doesn’t want to create an event where the guests have an experience that wows them and has them asking you “when are you hosting another outdoor movie event”

There are four key items that are needed to create a memorable outdoor movie event.

1. The most important thing you can do when creating a memorable outdoor movie experience is to pick the right movie.
You need to pick one that will appeal to the entire crowd. Think about what type of people will be attending. Is it a church gathering? Will most of the guests have children? In order for the event to be a success the movie must be appropriate for all ages and not offensive. Use the theme of your event as a starting point. If you’re showing it by the water, pick a sea related film. When on a football field or baseball diamond, choose a movie with a sports storyline.

The best movies will keep the children entertained without boring the adults. There are many family style movies that fit this description. Use the rating as a guide, but keep in mind that the PG rating of the 80’s isn’t the same as today’s standards. The best way to make sure that your guests will enjoy the show is to ask their opinions. Have those who will be attending make recommendations and vote on the final decision. Not only will you be reassured of having chosen the right movie, but they will be more likely to come.

2. The backdrop of the venue enhances the outdoor movie experience. Picking the right location is as important as finding the perfect show. Watching a movie outdoors isn’t just about the feature film. It’s about watching in a unique setting that makes the event memorable. Any flat grassy area will do nicely, especially if the grass is soft rather than stiff and prickly. Hillsides make terrific amphitheater type settings as well. To ensure a beautiful location under the stars, find a park setting or stunning scenery such as mountains or a lake as a backdrop.

You’ll also want to make sure the location you find is free of nighttime hazards such as ant hills or rocks. If you are near water, select a spot that is clear of goose and duck droppings. Visit the area after dark to get a feel for it. Avoid railroad tracks and busy roads. Not only will the noise be bothersome, but the lights can be incredibly distracting. Call the local police department to check on the crime rate in the area. You want all of your guests to feel safe.

3. When having a memorable outdoor movie event, it’s all in the equipment. The outdoor cinema equipment used for your show can vary among rental companies. In order to have a show with a picture that looks amazing and has riveting sound, hire a company that specializes in only outdoor movie events. Screens that don’t require a blower can be placed closer to the water’s edge. Check for the screen’s wind ratings. You won’t want to have it blow over during the event. Quiet generators are a big plus as well, and ask when they can start showing the movie. You can start movies before it is completely dark with the high end portable screen systems, something that is appreciated by families with small children. Southern Outdoor Cinema can provide your event with large inflatable screens that are ideal for your individual setting.

4. The snacks you serve will make your outdoor movie event even more memorable. Most of us think food and movies go hand in hand. How do you have one without the other? After all, popcorn has been considered a movie must have since the depression era when theater owners sold it to keep their business afloat.

Concession snacks are an important part of the event, but they don’t have to be costly. In fact, the money brought in from selling snacks can help cover expenses. You can sell popcorn for $1 while it only costs 15¢ to make. You can also offer free advertising for those who donate food. When working with a school group or similar organization, ask for donations from those in the group. Parents can help by contributing small bagged snacks. You’ll also find great deals on bulk snacks at the big box stores.
