Independence day: 5 Movies to Celebrate Independence

Posted by Paul Murray on Monday Jun 30, 2014 Under Movie Articles

Movies About Independence

Independence Day is an American holiday used to celebrate the Declaration of Independence which took affect on July 4, 1776. It was a declaration of our independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain otherwise known as the United Kingdom, and is commonly celebrated on July 4th of each year. Here are a few movies that would be perfect for watching on Independence Day this year.

An American tale

An American Tale is the animated story of a family of mice who escapes from Russia during the late 1800s, a time when it was being ruled by a Czar of Russian cats. Fievel Mousekewitz is a Russian-Jewish mouse who escapes to America in search of a land free of cats and their cruel way of ruling over mice. However, things go terribly wrong when Fievel is separated from his family, when they arrive in New York City, and when he finds out that there are just as many cats in America as there were in Russia. During Fievel’s adventure he meets good mice and he meets bad mice, and he even (to his surprise) makes friends with a cat. But will Fievel ever find his family again? That is a question that will only be answered by watching An American tale.

The Patriot

Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) is a farmer who fought in the French-Indian wars, became a peaceful man after the death of his wife, and was forced to lead a regiment of Carolina patriots to make a sizable difference in the American Revolution. Gabriel (Heath Ledger), Benjamin’s son, joins in the fight against the British only to return home seriously injured, and with a warrant for his arrest. Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs) arrives to arrest Gabriel, and in the skirmish accidentally kills another of Benjamin’s sons. With one son sentenced to be hung, and another left dead, Benjamin is forced back into a life that he vowed never to return to. With the help of a friend, and fellow brother-at-arms Harry Burwell (Chris Cooper), Benjamin successfully rescues his son, and together they form the Regiment of Carolina patriots who become heroes to the colonists and wanted by the British. The Patriot is a story of just how fine the line can be that separates revenge and courage, and of just how far a father’s love will take him even in the midst of war.

Independence Day

When a group of spaceships approach earth, they are greeted with open arms in anticipation of a peaceful first meeting with alien life. To everyone’s surprise, the first meeting with alien life is going to turn into a fight for the lives of everyone on earth, and for the survival of earth itself. Independence Day is definitely Hollywood’s take on how the first battle with alien life should be as it is fought by some of the most unlikely of characters. In the midst of the chaos, it is a computer genius (Jeff Goldblum) who foresaw the alien’s true intent, along with a hot-shot pilot (Will Smith) and the President of the United States (Bill Pullman), who leads the fight against the alien evil. But will they succeed? Watch Independence Day and find out who wins in the final battle for earth!

National Treasure

Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) is a man on a mission, and the mission is the same mission that generations before him have found themselves a part of; protect the code that leads to treasures beyond your wildest imagination. But the only way to protect the code is to steal the very treasures that holds the clues to breaking the code in the first place. National Treasure is the story of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, and the enormous cache of gold that they were supposed to have hid during the Revolutionary War. But more importantly, it is about a single man on a quest to protect the clues left by these three men, the clues that could make anyone lucky enough to find them rich beyond their wildest imagination.

-Coming to America

Coming to America stars Eddie Murphey as African prince Akeem, and Arsenio Hall as his faithful retainer Semmi. The two find themselves in America, which is all part of prince Akeem’s plan to avoid a marriage, arranged by his father (James Earl Jones), that he so desperately wants to avoid. While in America, prince Akeem takes a regular job at a fast food chain in order to avoid being detected for who he really is. This is where he meets the woman who he falls in love with (daughter of the owner of the restaurant chain) and who he eventually wants to marry. Now all prince Akeem has to do is convince the King that his love is more important than a tradition that goes back for longer than he can remember.

Movie On Lake Lanier – An Unique Staycation

Posted by Paul Murray on Saturday Jun 28, 2014 Under Event Productions

Outdoor Movie On Lake Lanier Staycations have become a popular option for families who are looking to save money by keeping close to home without sacrificing fun. The residents of Dawsonville, Georgia and the surrounding communities have found the ideal way to do this by having a “Movies in the Park”” event at War Hill Park each June. Families can play all day, enjoy the sand between their toes while watching a movie, and then spend the night in the campground.

Beach Close to Atlanta
Most people don’t even realize there is a beach this close to Atlanta, but Dawsonville is only about a one hour’s drive from the city. This is where you’ll find War Hill Park. The park is home to Lake Lanier and its surrounding beach. Visitors can go swimming in the lake or choose to take a boat out if they like. The beach itself offers fun for all. It’s a terrific place to lie in the sun, play in the sand, or join in a game of beach volley ball.

To make everyone’s experience even more special, Dawson County Parks & Recreation has made a tradition of showing movies on the beach each June. Southern Outdoor Cinema setups up a large inflatable screen on the shores of Lake Lanier where families can spread out blankets and set up lawn chairs to enjoy the main feature. It’s a great opportunity to gather with friends and family. Best of all, the restless children will have plenty of room to play while waiting for the main attraction.

Family Picnic
As evening approached, War Hill Park was the perfect place for a picnic dinner. There are many picnic tables scattered about the area as well as grills for cooking out on. This made an ideal transition for those who planned on staying for the beach side movie event.

Movie on the Beach
After such a busy day, everyone loved being able to settle down in the evening to watch a movie and enjoy being outdoors relaxing. Many brought snacks and found the outdoor theater a great addition to their staycation activities. A family friendly show was selected so that no one had to be excluded. People of all ages will look forward to doing this again.

Family Camping
Once the movie was over, the fun continued. Families had the option of spending the night at the War Hill Park campground. Each primitive campsite had a fire pit, grill, and lantern hook. There was a bath house with restrooms and showers nearby, and boat ramps on the beach. They had everything to make their camping a pleasant experience.

Locals and visitors alike had a wonderful time at the movies in the park event. It was the perfect way to spend a staycation with friends and loved ones. These families will have memories to last a lifetime, and they will be telling stories about watching movies with the sand between their toes for years to come.

‘My Cousin Vinny’ Filmed in Georgia

Posted by Paul Murray on Thursday Jun 26, 2014 Under Georgia Film Industry

My Cousin Vinny

‘My Cousin Vinny’, starring Joe Pesci, Ralph Macchio and Marisa Tomei, is a 1992 comedy. The film follows two New Yorkers, Bill and Stan, who are travelling through a rural Alabama town and find themselves falsely accused of murder. Bill and Stan get Bill’s cousin, Vinny, to defend them even though he is a personal injury lawyer who was newly admitted as a lawyer and isn’t quite sure what he is doing during most of the trial. Marisa Tomei won an Academy Award for her supporting role in the film. The movie is set in the fictional Beechum County in Alabama, but was actually filmed in Georgia.

‘My Cousin Vinny’ took to several Georgia locations for filming. One of those locations was Alto, Georgia. The scenes in the film that take place in the state penitentiary were filmed at the Lee Arrendale Correctional Institute in Alto. The facility is located at 2023 Gainesville Hwy outside of Gainesville. Since the filming of the prison scenes took place here, the prison has become a women’s prison facility.

Filming for ‘My Cousin Vinny’ also took place in Monticello, Georgia. The exterior courthouse scenes were filmed at the Jasper County Superior Court that is located in the town square. The scene where Bill and Stan are interrogated and where they are eventually charged with murder, was filmed at the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. There were also various other shots of the town square that can be seen in the movie. A restaurant scene in the film where Vinny and his fiance get into a fight was filmed at what is now called Dave’s BBQ and Soul food, (it was called Dave’s Bar-B-Que and Seafood during filming), located in the town square. The Sac-O-Suds convenient store in the beginning of the film, (where all of the trouble starts for Bill and Stan), was an actual convenient store located in Monticello during the time filming took place. It is no longer open.

Outside of Eatonton, Georgia, there is the General Putnam Motel. This motel was featured in a few scenes of the movie. It is the motel where Vinny and his fiance stay when they first get to the fictional Alabama city to help out Bill and Stan. There is a restaurant attached to the motel as well, where a scene was filmed. The motel is located at 744 Madison Road.

Other filming locations for ‘My Cousin Vinny’ include a plantation located in Bostwick, and a few inside courtroom scenes that were filmed in Covington.

‘My Cousin Vinny’ was highly praised for its accurate portrayal of what happens in a courtroom during a trial. It is currently available on both DVD and Blu-ray.

Movie Event Highlight of Fundraising Carnival

Posted by Paul Murray on Tuesday Jun 24, 2014 Under Event Productions

Outdoor Movie Fundraising

School carnival fundraisers are an excellent and fun way to earn money that schools need. Recently a school had a spring festival to raise their needed funds. The highlight of this event was an outdoor movie shown on a large inflatable screen. Not only was it fun for students and their families, but it made the fundraiser more attractive for the community. Several residents came out to support the school and enjoy the film.

This school carnival fundraiser was organized by the PTA. They wanted to create an event that both the children and their parents could enjoy together. They decided to include a variety of activities throughout the afternoon. A rock climbing wall was brought in for the students to use, and several bounce houses were set up on the school grounds. Fun carnival games were included in the lineup, along with an old fashioned dunk tank. Students loved the opportunity to dunk their favorite teachers and grown-ups.

SPORTING ACTIVITIES
Sporting activities provided plenty of outdoor exercise for the kids and their families. A sack race that the kids could participate in added to the excitement. They even included a small miniature golf putting green and a small scale soccer practice area. A local Taekwondo school gave demonstrations and showed children how to do a few basic moves.

Inflatable Sports Arena

PHOTOBOOTH
Photo ops were plentiful. The PTA made arrangements for a photo booth where small groups could have a great time creating silly poses. A tee pee made the ideal backdrop for still photos.

OUTDOOR MOVIE
The day was topped off with a movie event. It was held outdoors where a large inflatable screen was set up. Guests brought blankets to spread out, along with lawn chairs for seating. It was a relaxing and casual setting, perfect for an evening of family entertainment. After spending the day playing the games, participating in the sports, and taking advantage of the photo ops, students and their parents were presented with a blockbuster film.

FOOD TRUCKS
No one went hungry during the movie. Food trucks partnered with the school in order to provide tasty meal options for this special event. It was the perfect way to fill up after enjoying all of the day’s other events.

Potato Sack

This school’s spring fundraiser carnival was a huge success. The community loved being able to come out for the day and enjoy time together doing family friendly activities. After a good meal, they all settled down for a little relaxing while watching the movie on the inflatable screen. Everyone agreed that the movie was the highlight of the event, and it was a great ending to a fun filled day.

“Driving Miss Daisy” Filmed in Atlanta

Posted by Paul Murray on Thursday Jun 19, 2014 Under Georgia Film Industry

Driving Miss Daisy Movie

“Driving Miss Daisy”, a 1989 Oscar-winning movie, is set in Atlanta, GA in the 1950’s. Fittingly, the movie is filmed in Atlanta and in a couple of the smaller towns that surround the city. Filmmakers do not always have the opportunity to shoot movies in the locations the story is actually set it, but in the case of “Driving Miss Daisy” a beautiful old mansion located in Atlanta played the role of Daisy’s house perfectly.

The production crew did have to make some changes to the house before it could be known as Daisy’s house, including renovating the kitchen. Overall the house, which was built in the 1920’s, worked well and the scenes that took place in Daisy’s house were filmed right there in the mansion, rather than in a studio like many movie sets.

The Atlanta house used for filming had the perfect look for the 1950’s setting, but the streets of Atlanta had too much of a modern look to fit in with the driving scenes in “Driving Miss Daisy”. The town of Griffin, GA was used for filming many driving scenes. Griffin is located very close to Atlanta, but has a much different and less modern look than the nearby city.

Smaller, less modern-looking towns like Griffin and Senoia, GA, provide a great backdrop for movies and television shows that need a small southern town setting. The town of Senoia, in particular, has become a hub for this type of filming. In addition to “Driving Miss Daisy”, movies like “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Footloose”, as well as the hit TV show “The Walking Dead” have been filmed in Senoia in recent years.

Senoia has a beautiful small town look, and has grown tremendously over the years. Crew and cast members spend money in the town during filming shopping and eating. Additionally, successful movies and television shows draw fans to their filming locations, resulting in tourists visiting and spending money in the towns.

Visiting filming locations from a favorite film is a wonderful experience. The Made in Georgia Outdoor Movie Tour provided an even better opportunity for movie fans: the chance to watch movies filmed in Georgia in the exact locations they were filmed. The tour did an outdoor movie screening of “Driving Miss Daisy” in Senoia. Southern Outdoor Cinema set up a huge inflatable movie screen in the middle of Main Street, the exact spot where scenes from the movie were filmed. It was an exciting experience for local residents and movie fans.
