April Fools Day: 3 Movies That Will Make You Laugh

Movies About April Fools Day

While April Fools Day might not be a national holiday of sorts, it is probably one of the funniest days of the entire year. It falls on the 1st day of April each year and is a day full of pranks, practical jokes, and hoaxes played on one another simply for the fun of it all. There are actually an enormous number of movies appropriate for watching on April Fools Day but here are three of the top picks.

April Fools Day

There are some April Fools Day pranks that just aren’t funny at all, and the movie “April Fools Day” is loaded with quite a few of them. Buffy (Deborah Foreman) is a rich girl whose birthday just so happens to fall on April 1st so she decides to invite a bunch of her college friends to her families vacation home, located on a small island in the middle of nowhere, to help her celebrate. The pranks begin before the ferry has a chance to reach the island and some go a little too far, but none as far as the pranks that involve guests disappearing one by one once at Buffy’s family getaway. What begins as a fun April Fools Weekend amongst friends quickly turns into a weekend with one simple goal…to survive!

Batman

If there were ever a movie made that included a character who was the epitome of April Fools Day, it would have to be “Batman”, and the character the Joker. Michael Keaton is Bruce Wayne, a multi-millionaire eccentric by day and Batman, a crime fighting caped crusader by night. Jack Nicholson is the Joker, the quirky criminal who keeps Batman busy with all of his crude attempts at being funny, while always looking for ways to rob the city blind. And Kim Basinger is Vicki Vale, the photojournalist that both Batman and the Joker would love to be with. There is never a dull moment in the action packed adventure that is “Batman”

Billy Madison

When a rich, spoiled, and extremely childish Billy Madison (Adam Sandler) is forced to leave his life of laziness and drunken poolside parties to return to grade school, things get very interesting very quickly. Billy is in line to take over the family business when the time comes, but his father (Darren McGavin) decides to see if Billy has still got what it takes, and gives him an ultimatum. Billy can return to school, pass grades K-12 in 24 weeks time, and take control of the family business as planned, or he can kiss his chance at running the family business goodbye for good. Billy realizes that there is but one choice and it is to enroll in Kindergarten and prove to everyone that he can be a responsible adult. This will be the toughest thing that Billy has ever attempted but the question is, can he finish what he has started? This is a question that can only be answered by watching the movie “Billy Madison” this coming April Fools Day.

‘The Watch’ Starring Ben Stiller, Filmed in Georgia

Posted by Paul Murray on Thursday Mar 27, 2014 Under Georgia Film Industry

Filmed in Georgia: The Watch

Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill starred in the 2012 film, ‘The Watch’ that was filmed in Georgia. ‘The Watch’ follows a group of suburban dads who form a neighborhood watch in efforts to get time away from their families, and end up defending the Earth from an alien invasion. The film was originally written by Jared Stern as a teen-targeted film, but after several people joined and then left the project, the film took a new direction. Writers, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg rewrote the script with Stern to make it geared more towards adult audiences. Filming began in October 2011 and finished up in January 2012.

One of the filming locations that is seen throughout the movie was at Marietta Square in Marietta, Georgia. Various spots throughout the square were used in shots for the film. The Australian Bakery along the square had their sign changed to a fictional name for the movie. One of the scenes shot in the square involved a boy on his skateboard being chased and abducted by an alien. To provide the right atmosphere for this scene, all of the streetlights were shut off as well as the lights from the surrounding establishments. Some businesses were closed during this time, but many remained open. The First Presbyterian Church at 189 Church St in Marietta was used as a base camp for the production team.

‘The Watch’ took to several metro Atlanta locations to film portions involving neighborhood scenes. The Amberton and Oakleigh subdivision in Powder Springs was used for a few scenes in the film and utilized many of the residents as extras. The Echo Mill subdivision in West Cobb County also hired several residents as extras for the scenes shot there. The Campbell High School football stadium in Cobb County also has some screen time in the movie. Back in Powder Springs, the Trinity Chapel on Macland Rd served as a staging area for all of the equipment trucks.

Filming for ‘The Watch’ also took place at Inman Park on the East Side of Atlanta and at the EUE/Screen Gems Studios in Atlanta. Inman Park is Atlanta’s first planned community and one of the nation’s first garden suburbs, built in 1890. EUE/Screen Gems Studios opened in 2010. It is a 10-stage, 33 acre studio with 138,000 square ft of production and flex space as well as 40,000 square ft of office space. The studio is a few minutes from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and they offer hourly flights daily to New York and Los Angeles. They are also located minutes from downtown Atlanta’s luxury hotels. Georgia’s film tax credit of up to 30 percent was a big reason for building the studio and it has since helped to bring hundreds of films to the area.

‘The Watch’ was released in theaters in July 2012 and is currently available on Blu-ray and DVD.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Walter is an imaginative character living a very imaginative life, for the most part. His reality is a life caring for his aging mother, and working for LIFE Magazine as a negative asset manager. The adventures that he lives through his imagination, however, are adventures that he would much rather be living in reality from day to day. He is quiet, hard working, focused and altogether unhappy.

There are many-a-days that Walter catches himself drifting off into a totally different world. The only problem is that this world is always in his imagination. It is just that Walter wishes so badly for more in his life that his wishes become reality in his imagination alone.

The majority of Walters imaginative adventures consist of him being the hero that he so badly wants to be. He is usually jumping into action, defending those who need defending. He is brave, strong and capable in his imagination, and longs for this to be his reality.

Walter really does enjoy his job at LIFE Magazine, developing photographs taken by some of the greatest photographers in the world. He does, however, feel like an absolute nobody compared to each and every one of them. To make things even worse, the cover photo for the final print edition of the magazine goes missing, and everyone is putting the blame on Walter. People are being fired by the handful, because the magazine is going totally online, and he must find the photo quick.

Walter decides that the best thing to do is to search for the photograph himself. His thinking is that he must be sure that he even turned over the negative to begin with. The only problem is that the rest of the pictures on the roll of film suggest that the person Walter must find is somewhere in the Himalayas, or Greenland, or somewhere out there in that neck of the woods. And if that weren’t bad enough, Walter realizes that he hasn’t been more than 50 miles away from home, ever!

A decision is made and Walter comes to the conclusion that he is going to have to do whatever it takes to solve the mystery of the missing photograph.

Positive Elements

Walter mentions the fact that he had a very difficult time after his father died. He had to make a choice, and that choice was to set his future plans aside so that he could help his mother support the family. It was because of that choice that his family stayed so close throughout his lifetime.

Parent Movie Review - The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by Southern Outdoor Cinema As a result of Walters search for the photographer, he begins living out his imaginative adventures in real life. He has an opportunity to jump into the ocean from a helicopter while he is in Greenland, skateboard directly towards a volcano that is literally erupting and swim with real live sharks. It is through each of these adventures that Walter comes to truly cherish life rather than to fear it.

While with the photographer (O’Connell), Walter learns an even more important life lesson. It is when O’Connell passes up on an opportunity to photograph a live snow leopard, so that he can simply gaze at its beauty instead, that Walter realizes that life is more about appreciating those special moments. That is when Walter begins to look at life in a totally different way.

After O’Connell gives Walter an imprinted, handmade, wallet that says something that has a big impact on him, he finds the courage to approach his boss and stand up for everyone that he treats as if they were unimportant.

Walter begins to care for a single mother, and co-worker, by the name of Cheryl. He develops a sincere, and nurturing, relationship with her that continues to grow.

Violent Elements

While Walter is jumping from the helicopter, into the ocean, he barely escapes being eaten by a shark. He comes very close to being overwhelmed by the ashes of the erupting volcano. Walter also comes very close to getting into a fight at a bar, and cuts his forehead when he slams into a road sign while riding a bike one day.

Walter and his boss experience a hero/villain battle during one of his adventurous daydreams. In it, they crash to the street, only after going through an elevator’s plate glass window. He has a near death experience, while jumping into a burning building to save another person’s pet in another one of his imaginative adventures.

Drug and Alcohol Elements

There is a scene while Mitty is in Greenland, where a group of men are in a local area bar drinking beer and getting quite drunk. The pilot of the helicopter happens to be one of the men in the group, and he jumps into the helicopter while drunk to fly the helicopter. Mitty makes a bad decision and climbs into the helicopter, as well, deciding that it is his only choice.

Conclusion

The primary lesson here is one that many would find very valuable indeed. There are quite a few individuals who find themselves in the very same boat that Mitty found himself in, daydreaming about a life worth living rather than living it instead. Living a life full of adventure doesn’t always have to equate to being the hero on a daily basis, jumping from helicopters and burning buildings. It can rather equate to being the hero that makes the decision to care for his family or the decision to care for the single mother in need of help.

Life doesn’t always have to consist of hustle and bustle. In fact, it should be more about those single, special moments that would easily pass us by had we not been sitting quiet and still, waiting to notice them to begin with. Mitty shows us that we should cherish the small moments, as well as those around us, as if they were the blessings that they truly are.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a movie that begins by showing us the life that many of us face each day, but ends by showing us the life that many would be much better of living in the end. It is full of surprises and is one that is actually extremely positive in nature.

Movie Night at the Auction House

Is there ever a terrible time to sit back and enjoy a terrific movie? The only answer that comes to mind, right about now, would have to be no. The biggest problem, for most people, has always been finding the time to actually get to the movies. Well Southern Outdoor Cinema has taken care of that little problem, once and for all, by bringing the movies to you.

Our inflatable movie screens allow us to provide theater size movie fun wherever, and whenever, the need should arise. Add our newest no-blower movie screen technology to the mix and what you have is the makings for an amazing event. You can now have all of the movie fun with none of the annoying background noise. There is simply no downside to letting Southern Outdoor Cinema provide great entertainment for your next event.

Indoor movie during a car auction in Atlanta

Take the latest auction that we provided movie entertainment for in Atlanta. Simply providing auction guests with a couple of great movies to enjoy between auctions was enough to keep them around for the entire auction. It naturally took time to transition from one auction item to the next (especially when dealing with classic cars), so providing movies like Smokey and the Bandit, and The Gumball Rally were perfect for keeping customers happy while waiting. What it really did was provide the auction company with an increased number of potential buyers, for a longer period of time.

It was a fantastic time, and not just because of all of the great items that were up for auction (although the 1961 Austin Countryman Woody that the inflatable movie screen was set-up next to looked fabulous). It was a fantastic time because of the fact that the auction company provided two great movies for guests to watch between auctions, and Southern Outdoor Cinema was able to help make it happen. It is safe to say that, were it not for the great movies playing between auctions, customers might not have stayed at the auction as long as they ended up staying. That is the reality of just how beneficial it can be to provide movies played on an inflatable movie screen, provided by Southern Outdoor Cinema, at your next event.

The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to providing movies for guests to enjoy at your next event. Our inflatable movie screens come in a variety of different sizes which makes providing movie entertainment for your upcoming event a definite reality. Whether your next event is going to be an indoor event, or an outdoor event, makes no difference whatsoever. The only thing that really matters is that you provide your guests with a great movie to enjoy on an inflatable movie screen, from Southern Outdoor Cinema.

Indoor Drive-in Event in Atlanta

Company picnics, community festivals and county fairs are only improved when an inflatable movie screen is set up for guests to enjoy. In fact, the size of the event makes no difference either. Big or small, thousands of guests or just a few, none of that matters. If the entertainment is the only thing keeping you from finalizing your event plans, then let us help you get it done. A great movie is a great movie, no matter how many people are enjoying it.

‘Flight’ Starring Denzel Washington, Filmed in Georgia

Posted by Paul Murray on Thursday Mar 20, 2014 Under Georgia Film Industry

‘Flight’ is a 2012 film about an airplane pilot who manages to save most of his passengers by bringing his malfunctioning plane to a heroic crash landing, but when the crash is investigated, the physical state of the pilot during the flight comes into question. The film, starring Denzel Washington and directed by Robert Zemeckis, dives into the life of the pilot, who is an alcoholic and drug-abuser. ‘Flight’ was nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Actor (for Denzel Washington) and Best Original Screenplay, at the 85th Academy Awards. The screenwriter, John Gatins, had originally set this film in Oklahoma, but ended up changing the setting to Atlanta because of the area having both the urban and rural feel that the script called for. Having the world’s busiest airport and the tax breaks that the state has also pushed his decision to change the film’s setting.

One of the filming locations was Hall’s Flying Ranch at 771 Hall Road Hampton, Georgia. Hall’s Flying Ranch is a privately owned small airport that used to be owned by a family who would give private flight training. The property has a barn-like hangar built for one small plane and a 2150 ft grassy landing strip. ‘Flight’ used this property to stand in as the farm house property that Denzel Washington’s character retreats to after the media circus surrounding the plane crash. The only thing the crew had to build for the set was the actually farm house seen in the film. The house was not already a part of the property. Hall’s Flying Ranch is locating about 35 miles south of Atlanta. The film crew also had another set that needed built, and that was for the crash site. The film chose a private farm, Green Valley Farms to build the elaborate and large set. The farm is located on an isolated stretch of Highway 278 in Covington, Georgia. Though in the film the crash happened just a few miles outside of the city, the set had to be constructed further away due to its large size.

Since the film is actually set in Atlanta, the majority of the filming did take place in the city. Atlanta’s oldest and most distinguished hospital, St. Joseph’s, was used for the hospital scenes in the film. They filmed in the hospital’s critical care wing. The Marriott Marquis Hotel on 265 Peachtree Center Avenue was also an establishment where the film shot some of its scenes. The Marriott Marquis is quickly becoming a popular place for films to shoot. ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ did some filming there in 2012.

‘Flight’ was released in theaters in November 2012 and is currently available on Blu-ray and DVD.
