Meet Keith: Outdoor Movie Engineer at Southern Outdoor Cinema

Posted by Paul Murray on Sunday Jul 14, 2013 Under Company News

How long have you worked for Southern Outdoor Cinema?
I have worked as an outdoor movie engineer with Southern Outdoor Cinema for over 4 years. I started as an event assistant during large outdoor movie productions. I learned the ropes by shadowing Southern Outdoor Cinema’s founder, Paul Murray, during many movies in the park events in Atlanta.

What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is “Top Gun” because I wanted to be a fighter pilot ever since I was a kid.

What is your favorite concession food?
I love to eat pizza while watching movies. Pizza topped with lots of pepperoni.

What inflatable movie screen sizes do you setup?
I setup screens of all sizes: from the 10′ screens for small private events to the Ginormous 70′ screen for large film festivals. I really enjoy working events with the 70′ screen. The screen is so huge in size!

What was your most favorite outdoor movie event you worked on?
My favorite event was the outdoor movie event held at the NFL Carolina Panthers training camp. We setup a huge inflatable Airscreen right on the stadium grounds. The event crew was able to meet the football players and watch them practice.

Three Myths About Movie Licensing You Need To Know Before Hosting A Movie Event

Posted by Paul Murray on Wednesday Jul 10, 2013 Under Tips

Movie Copyrights Considering ways to minimize costs for your next indoor or outdoor movie event?

One area where scrimping is a big no-no is movie licensing. Some outdoor movie companies will not work with you during this process in order to save themselves a few bucks and some time.

Here are a few warning signs you may be working with a company who doesn’t care about making sure your event goes off without a hitch.

1) Movie studios don’t have time to check up on illegal movie events. Social media and other internet sites have revolutionized promotion and event advertising. This also makes it much easier for licensing companies and filmmakers to make sure they aren’t enduring copyright infringement.

Much like employers nowadays are checking out Facebook and Twitter social media profiles before hiring, movie studios are diligently checking on illegal showings of their films. Ever notice how quickly YouTube video clips of movies and television shows get pulled? It is just as easy for them to find out if a public movie showing isn’t properly licensed.

2) If you get caught, just feign ignorance. Just because copyright law was not made available to you by an unprofessional company doesn’t mean you are off the hook. If the movie studio or licensing company can prove willful infringement, the penalty is huge – up to five years in jail or a $250,000 fine.

Yikes!

The cost of obtaining a movie license is minuscule in comparison to the fines and penalties associated with copyright infringement. Unfortunately, event planners are held liable for such infringement, not the outdoor movie company.

An unprofessional company will leave you holding the bag. Or, in this case, the bag of popcorn.

3) Not obtaining a license is only hurting big movie studios. They don’t really care and can afford to have a few illegal showings go unnoticed. Anyone who works in the movie industry will disagree vehemently with this myth.

Licensing requirements are not simply a way for companies to make money off of folks showing movies without a license. The laws are in place to make sure filmmakers and screenwriters continue to create really great movies!

Without licensing, these folks would have little recourse to ensure their works are protected and financed.

Remember, when you are planning a large-scale movie event, this falls under the public performance requirement of copyright law.

Even if the showing is free to the public or being held by a non-profit organization, a license is required for such an event.  The requirements for an educational exemption are very specific. There are no exceptions!

The public performance requirement excludes folks showing a movie for a few family and friends, but not movie events like we help you plan.

And there’s the key: At SOC, we assist you in obtaining a quote for the movie you wish to show, and we fill out licensing paperwork on your behalf to ensure your outdoor movie showing is legal.

We really take this seriously and have been for years. For more information on movie licensing, check out our FAQ.

How To Setup A Photo Booth At Your Next Outdoor Movie Event

Posted by Paul Murray on Tuesday Jul 9, 2013 Under Event Productions, Tips

At Southern Outdoor Cinema, we love to produce outdoor movies that leave event guests with a FUNnominal experience. Recently we added a photo booth to a Movies in the Park in Alpharetta, GA. Movie guests felt like celebrities as they stepped up to red carpet, picked a prop and posed for our cameras.

We wanted to share our photo booth setup with you, so that you too can add some silly pre-movie fun to your next outdoor movie event. Here is how to setup a photo booth at your outdoor movie event.

1.) Set Up a Backdrop - We used a 7 x 7 vinyl banner with the event sponsors logos that was created by our local print shop.

You can use a number of backdrops, included a painted wall, fabric or large seemless sheet of paper. Your backdrop should be tall enough to be a foot above your guests and wide enough to allow for a few people in the photo. You can use a professional stand to hang your backdrop from or attached your backdrop to a wall with tape.

2.) Setup A Camera - You’ve got to get the snap shot. Setup a camera on a tripod or use your smart phone. Make sure you have batteris and ample storage space on your camera. Also provide an area for your guests to take photos of their own.

3.) Provide the Props - This is the fun part. Provide a variety of props for your guest to pose with. Don’t know where to start? Just open your own closet. Look for some unusual items like a fluffy scarf, gloves that were worn to the prom or even some old costumes. Next check out the local thirft and consignment shops. Look for objects like large picture frames, suitcases, musical instruments. Take a trip to the local party shop. There you will find oversized sunglasses, feather boas and inflatable decorations.

4.) Tell Them What To Do: Having a sign telling your guests what’s going on. Don’t assume they have done this before. We placed a red carpet where they were to stand, but if you don’t have a carpet you can place an X on the ground. We simply told people: grab a prop, stand on the red carpet and say “cheese”.

We had a blast with our photo booth and so did our event guests. So for your next outdoor movie event, why don’t you offer a photo booth. Your guests will have a fun snap shot memory of your special event.

Outdoor movies can be customized to meet the needs of any apartment community. If there are a lot of families in your complex, a family friendly movie is probably a good choice. You can add extras such as a concession stand or children’s activities to add to the family fun. If you choose to host the outdoor movie at the community pool, your event becomes a fun combination of movie viewing and enjoying the pool; residents can sit by the side of the pool or float around while enjoying the movie on a warm evening.

An outdoor movie event is a great way to keep residents in an apartment complex happy. Your tenants will appreciate a way to enjoy a fun night with family and friends close to home, as well as the opportunity to get to know their neighbors in a relaxed setting.
