Churches Host Outdoor Movie Night Instead of Trick or Treat

Posted by Paul Murray on Monday Sep 24, 2012 Under Event Productions, Tips

Parents all over are experiencing increasing fears about the safety of trick or treating and other traditional Halloween activities. Adults worry about children being out after dark, especially unsupervised, and are concerned about the risks of consuming treats from strangers. Trusted community organizations like churches have begun filling the need for safe and fun alternative activities for children. Planning a unique event filled with fun fall activities will help both parents and children have an enjoyable and worry free Halloween.

Churches looking for a unique way to help families in the community celebrate Halloween and the fall season should consider a Halloween or fall themed outdoor movie event. An event like this appeals to both children and parents as an alternative to potentially dangerous trick or treating or other unsupervised Halloween activities. Fun games and activities and a wholesome family movie are the keys to a successful alternative Halloween event.

The church can start the evening by offering some fun activities like bobbing for apples, fall or crafts, tractor rides and face painting. Volunteers can help run the booths and, if desired and possible, prizes like candy or other small favors can be given out to participating children. (Click Here To Tweet.)

A child friendly movie “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown”, or any other family movie, shown on a large movie screen will be the perfect ending to the event. After time spent with friends and family enjoying games and other activities; children and adults will enjoy relaxing and enjoying a movie together.

A safe fall event like this is perfect for families concerned about Halloween safety, or those who simply want to stay away from the stresses of trick or treating and enjoy a fun evening with friends and family. An outdoor movie adds a unique element that will make the event stand out and will encourage more families to attend.

All of the films are filled with entertaining pirate action and plenty of humor.

Jim boldly does what he can to stop the pirates from finding the treasure, and eventually prevails. In the end, the pirates are left on the island, except for Long John Silver; Jim sees that Silver has been a friend to him and helps him escape to freedom.

The Goonies

God At The Movies

Posted by Paul Murray on Monday Sep 17, 2012 Under Movie Articles

Outdoor movies are appropriate for a wide variety of venues: local parks, schools, businesses, and churches. Movies have a unique way of bringing people together, and movies can tell stories and convey important messages to viewers. Let’s explore the benefits of planning an outdoor movie at a church.

Why host an outdoor movie at your church? Outdoor movie events are popular and, if advertised in the community, can draw a crowd that includes un-churched community members. The event can be a great opportunity to reach out to members of the community who have not experienced church. This type of event invites those who may not be familiar with your mission to learn about your church, your teachings and your mission.

An outdoor movie event also provides a great outlet for family fun and fellowship with friends. In addition to fun, an appropriate movie can supplement your teaching and start an important conversation about what you are currently focusing on.

Movies can be very powerful. Movies have the power to tell important stories; in fact, today story telling often takes place at the movies. The stories told in movies can create a friendly and familiar connection to Jesus for church and community members since Jesus was a story teller.

Good movies can speak of the struggles of human existence in a way that the average person can relate to. Some movies remind us of our struggles to find hope and meaning and inspire us with examples of the power of redemption.

Movie choice is very important. You want to choose a movie that will appeal to church and community members, is age appropriate for your expected audience and that remains in line with the values of your church and community. (Click here to retweet this.)

We Bought a Zoo, a newer selection, will inspire viewers with the story of a family struggling to get over the loss of the wife and mother and fix up the old zoo they bought to save the animals and provide enjoyment for the community. The Blind Side tells the story of a young man who overcomes his troubled childhood and goes on to play professional football with the help and support of a loving Christian family. Other possible selections include Soul Surfer, Dolphin Tale, The Pursuit of Happyness, Rudy and Pay it Forward. Some of these movies speak directly about religion and church, while others inspire us simply by telling the stories of people who live their lives in loving in giving ways.

Outdoor movie events are perfect for a church because they provide a chance to gather with friends and family and invite un-churched people to join your community and learn more about the mission of your church. In addition, well chosen movies can promote the values and teachings that are important to your church and its members.
