Southern Outdoor Cinema brought the big screen to the small screen for the Oprah Winfrey Network’s new reality tv show “Lovetown USA.” The tv show was filmed in late spring in Kingsland, Georgia.

About the show
After a nationwide search, Oprah Winfrey chose Kingsland, Georgia, to be transformed into Lovetown, USA. Oprah launched the first-of-its-kind social experiment by traveling to Georgia, where she called the community to action at a “love rally” and challenged everyone to “open their arms and hearts to the possibilities of all kinds of love.” She has charged two experienced relationship coaches—Paul Carrick Brunson and Kailen Rosenberg—with the daunting task of transforming Kingsland in 30 short days.

Over the course of a month, Paul and Kailen will attempt to mend relationships of embattled friends and lovers—young and old—and find true love for singles. This social experiment, which involves everyone from government officials to grade school students, will examine how love, grace, kindness and forgiveness can affect an entire community.

Southern Outdoor Cinema’s featured on the show
For a segment of the tv show that involving a community / date night, Southern Outdoor Cinema produced an outdoor movie night on the town’s football field. Southern Outdoor Cinema’s crews setup a giant three-story tall Airscreen inflatable movie with digital projectors and cinema sound systems. The participants of the reality tv show enjoyed a picnic dinner while watching a Hollywood blockbuster film outdoors and under the stars.

The segment featuring Southern Outdoor Cinema’s outdoor movie setup will air in the television show “Lovetown USA” on OWN in August 2012.

How The Weather Forecast Can Effect an Outdoor Movie Event

Posted by Paul Murray on Thursday Aug 16, 2012 Under Tips

Today I want to talk to you about how to understand the weather forecast and how it affects your outdoor movie event.

One of the most important differences between an indoor and outdoor movie event, is that those who plan an outdoor movie event must take into consideration the weather. So a couple things to keep in mind. Number one, you should have an open dialogue with your outdoor movie provider. You should also know their weather policy before the actual day of the event and know what their policy states as far as it comes to weather. (Click here to tweet this.)

You should also be talking to them on the day of the event if there is any chance of rain, and they should help consult you on what to do in the chance that there would be rain and you would have a rain out. Number two, two of the most common issues for an outdoor movie rain and high winds. Consider viewing weather.com or any other forecasting site on the internet, and consider also watching live radar feeds.

A couple things to keep in mind about any forecast or radar. First thing to keep in mind about these services is the percentages, especially the hourly percentages, are prone to faultiness. Occasionally you will see forecasts that call for one hundred percent chance of rain at 6:00 only to be met with sunny skies.

Other times you might see a forecast for zero percent chance of rain as you’re standing in a deluge of water. So the hourly forecasts are sometimes suspect. They are updated more frequently, but you should always be concerned and back up any opinions you might have by a live radar feed. Now there are problems with watching a radar.

Radars will allow you to see any major oncoming storm, but they don’t really help that often when you have pop-up showers. So don’t fully rely just on the radar. Try to take the percentages that you’re seeing in the forecast and the radar when you’re actually making your decisions. Also if you do have a small pop-up storm and you know it’s gonna be small and you know it’s gonna be passing in 10 or 15 minutes, consider pausing your event rather than canceling the event for a few minutes and then continue on once the storm passes.

Number three, two of the most dangerous things that would affect your audience and staff during an outdoor movie event are lightning and high winds. Obviously, lightning can strike without warning, putting staff and audience in danger and realize that you don’t necessarily need to hear thunder before a lightning strike could happen in your area.

So always Be on the lookout, on radar and forecast, for any potential storms that would produce lightning and make sure that you take precautions ahead of time. Another thing that you have to worry about, during an outdoor movie event, are high winds. Sometimes winds will just occur. At other times, high winds will occur right before a storm hits.

Often times, this is the warning for you to go ahead and put an emergency action into plan. So definitely keep an eye on the winds, as they are affecting your audience and your movie screen. Most movie screen companies use low-end outdoor movie screens, and high winds will blow them over or rip screens off the surface.

So you definitely want to keep an eye on the winds. Professional outdoor movie companies use high-end screens that can withstand25 mile a hour or higher winds. So keep that in mind when you’re looking at your wind speeds. I hope you’ve been enjoying our outdoor movie tips.

5 Movies to Get You In the Mood for Football Season

Posted by Paul Murray on Wednesday Aug 15, 2012 Under Movie Articles

Football season is right around the corner. In fact, the pre-season is already underway. Get in the mood for the excitement of football season with these movies.

Little Giants
Football isn’t just about professional players, it’s also about the little ones just starting out and playing pee-wee football. A pair of brothers take their sibling rivalry onto the football field in this movie. The town’s existing team, the Cowboys, battles it out with the newly formed Little Giants. Both teams learn that football is about more than winning; it is also about friendship and teamwork.

The Blind Side
In the Blind side, Michael Oher touches us with his kindness and his ability to rise above his difficult childhood with the help of a loving new family and his abilities on the football field. The Blind Side is based partially on the true story of offensive lineman, Michael Oher.

We Are Marshall
We are Marshall is based on the tragic true story of the plane crash that took the lives of most of the Marshall University football players and coaching staff in 1970. The movie is full of sadness and grief, but also a beautiful display of courage as a new team is formed with the few remaining players along with some new inexperienced players. Amazingly, after a crushing loss at the first game, this team wins at its first home game of the season. This movie is a wonderful example of the way football can bring people together, even following a terrible tragedy.

The Waterboy
The Waterboy will make you laugh, but you will also cheer for Bobby Boucher as he finally stands up for himself and finds success in college and on the football field. Bobby starts out as a water boy who dropped out of high school, but ends up earning his GED, starting college, and playing football after he is encouraged by the coach. He even finds the strength to stand up to his overprotective but well-intentioned mother.

Any Given Sunday
Anything can happen in football. As the name of the movie suggests, something miraculous can happen “any given Sunday”. In this movie a team that is part of the Associated Football Franchises of America is struggling. Willie Beamen, the third string quarterback, is forced to play after injuries are sustained by both the starting and back-up quarterbacks. Beamen ends up surprising the team with his abilities, but his selfish attitude does not impress his coach or his teammates. Beamen is given the chance to prove himself again at the end of the movie, and he changes his selfish ways. This movie reminds us that the unexpected is always possible in football; watch it and get excited for the surprises to come this football season.

Outdoor Movie Event Planning – What if it Rains?

Posted by Paul Murray on Tuesday Aug 14, 2012 Under Tips

There are many wonderful things about outdoor movies; it is delightful to be outside with friends and family and enjoy a movie under the stars in a unique setting. Ill-timed rain can throw a devastating wrench into the plan if you have not considered the possibility of rain and planned ahead. Here are some tips for being prepared in case of inclement weather.

Have a Backup Plan In Case of Inclement Weather
Set a rain date ahead of time and be sure to advertise the alternate date. Alternatively, you can have an indoor location to move to. The decision to move to an indoor location must be made before setup to allow enough time for outdoor or indoor equipment setup. You should also make arrangements with the equipment provider ahead of time to make sure the screen will fit in the indoor location. An alternate indoor location is a great option for schools or colleges where a cafeteria or gym can be used. (Click here to tweet this.)

Hire a Professional Equipment Provider With Experience Dealing With the Rain
Venues with wet fields are not just messy, they can also cause a safety concern. Equipment providers who do not have experience and appropriate equipment will not understand that a wet ground surface will make it necessary to secure the screen with longer ground stakes.

Light rain will not deter the die-hard outdoor movie fan; this type of fan will come prepared with a lawn chair and an umbrella, still ready to enjoy the movie. Is your equipment provider prepared, though? High rate equipment providers will come prepared with water proof equipment or items such as covers or tents for their equipment so the show can go on. Top rate equipment is just as essential as professional technicians; a top rate inflatable movie screen such as Airscreen brand handle getting wet while still standing tall during the show.

Insurance
Sometimes when the rain is heavy enough and you do not have a viable indoor location, it will be necessary to cancel the event. This could happen with a large festival that happens once a year, for example. Weather insurance is the best way to protect your financial investment in this case.

It is disappointing when rain arrives and messes with the careful plans you have made for your outdoor movie event. Spend a little bit of extra time planning for inclement weather for the best chance of success.

5 Movies To Watch During Shark Week

Posted by Paul Murray on Wednesday Aug 8, 2012 Under Movie Articles

The Discovery Channel celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Shark Week this year beginning August 12th. Get in the spirit with one of these shark-themed movies. Some are harmless family friendly selections, while others, appropriate for adults only, will leave you scared and in awe of these incredible creatures. (Click Here to Tweet This.)

Jaws
No list of shark movies would be complete without Jaws. After a large shark terrorizes a popular beach in New England, three men, Martin Brody, the police chief, a shark hunter named Quint, and a marine biologist named Matt Hooper, head out on a boat to hunt down and kill the shark. After a fierce and scary battle, only Quint and Brody remain alive, and the shark is finally killed. This famous movie highlights the potential danger of sharks and the fear that sharks can illicit in people.

Open Water
This movie is particularly scary because it is based on a true story. A couple goes scuba diving with a group and they up getting left behind when an inaccurate head count is taken aboard the boat. Both Daniel and Susan are bitten by jellyfish, and their small wounds attract a large group of sharks. Daniel is eventually killed by the sharks, and Susan drowns herself before the sharks can kill her.

12 Days of Terror
12 Days of Terror is based on true events that occurred during the summer of 1916 on the shores of New Jersey. For twelve days, swimmers at New Jersey beaches sustained attacks by a large shark, before it was finally killed. The issue of sacrificing human safety for business is a part of this film, since officials hesitated to shut down beaches during the busy summer season, even following several dangerous attacks.

Finding Nemo
The first three selections are best for adults only. If you are looking for a family friendly option, try Finding Nemo. The main characters are a father and son pair of clown fish, but it is hard to forget the three sharks in the movie. Kids will love watching the funny antics of these sharks as they try to stick to their plan of giving up fish in their diet.

Shark Tale
Shark Tale is another family friendly shark movie selection. A trouble making fish and a vegetarian shark, who are both outcasts in their own communities, come together by chance. The fish, Oscar, falsely claims to have killed a shark that was killed while he was nearby, and enjoys the fame that comes with his new title of “Sharkslayer”. In the end, Oscar comes clean and makes amends with the important people in his life, and the vegetarian shark, Lenny, is finally accepted by his father. The group of fish and the group of sharks also come to a peace agreement.
