Preparing Your Movie Viewing Area For An Outdoor Movie Event – Part 2

Posted by Paul Murray on Monday May 28, 2012 Under Tips

Today I want to continue to talk to you about preparing your viewing area for your movie event. One of the things you should think about, is putting out trash cans. Also consider when putting out the trash cans, where people will be sitting, putting them out evenly dispersed, and not too close to where the screen will be.

Don’t Leave your Crowd in the Dark
Consider having some lights on hand if you don’t field lights for your location, or parking lot lights that you can turn on after the event. Make sure you have portable floodlights that you can bring to your event so that people can see when they are leaving. Also make sure that you have bathrooms available, whether they are a port-a-potty or they’re inside a building, have them clearly marked.

Check for Power
Make sure that you have enough power. Especially if you’re running concessions, make sure you have enough power for all of for all of your concessions, because things like popcorn machines can pull a lot of power. Make sure that you have all your power lines visibly marked so they are not tripping hazards.

Additional things to Look for
Make sure when prepping your location that any additional things on the field area, such as goose droppings, dog droppings, or anything else that somebody would not to step in or sit on, are cleaned up. Also, make sure, in addition to marking your cords, to mark any unsafe area such as a sudden dip in the land or a ditch or something somebody could easily walk into when it’s very dark outside.

Students Gain Experience Through Movie Night Planning

Posted by Paul Murray on Friday May 25, 2012 Under Event Productions

Great teachers are always looking for new, engaging ways to help students learn. Giving students real life responsibilities that allow them to apply what they are learning in the classroom and learn even more about the subject is an excellent strategy to be used in addition to traditional teaching methods. Movie nights held at schools are becoming increasingly popular because of the way they create a sense of community in the school and provide students with a safe opportunity to have fun with friends. Why not give a group of students the responsibility of planning a movie night? Here is how students can gain experience and benefit academically with movie night planning.

Students will gain valuable marketing and communication skills while selling sponsorship for the event. There are many ways to pay for a movie event, including selling tickets and finding sponsors from the community. Students in charge of finding sponsors will need to approach local businesses to solicit sponsorship. Once the sponsors are found, students with graphic art skills can create simple presentations to thank the sponsors and provide advertisement.

In addition to attracting sponsors, students will need to attract an audience through marketing. Students should be encouraged to be creative and use many marketing tactics to bring a crowd to the event. Students can hang posters around the school, hand out fliers, and request time during school announcements to speak about the event. If there is a school newspaper, the event could be advertised there.

Paying for the event and attracting a crowd are both essential pieces of the movie night planning puzzle, but the event will not be possible without considering the demographics and choosing an appropriate movie. Encourage students to think carefully about exactly which students they are going to focus on getting to this event. Do the students want to get incoming freshmen there? Is the event for upperclassmen nearing the end of their high school years? Teach students an important lesson about demographics and marketing by making sure they have clear goals and a plan in mind. Students can use surveys of the target audience as well as current movie popularity statistics to choose the best movie for the event.

There is also the important matter of basic logistics. Where will the students get the equipment for the event? The success of the movie night hinges upon finding and hiring a reliable and high quality equipment provider, and this requires time and research.

Food is also important at a movie event. Students can choose to charge admission to the event that includes food, set up a concession stand, or use a combination of both tactics and include food with admission and sell extras like drinks, movie candy and popcorn at a concession stand. The students will be responsible for choosing the best foods for the event, renting any necessary equipment such as a popcorn machine, running the concession stand on movie night, and cleaning up after the event.

Many movie events feature other types of entertainment in addition to the movie. Students should be encouraged or required to plan extras such as door prizes or other giveaways.

Hosting a movie night event at your school provides a wonderful and memorable experience for students. Why not take advantage of this opportunity, though, and make it a valuable learning experience? Students who attend a movie night event probably do not realize how much goes into planning this type of event and making it a success. High school students will be highly invested in the success of their event since their friends will probably be attending. Give students a unique chance to learn and apply valuable marketing, economics and communication skills by assigning the task of movie night planning to a group of your students.

Preparing Your Movie Viewing Area For An Outdoor Movie Event

Posted by Paul Murray on Thursday May 24, 2012 Under Tips

Today I want to talk to you about preparing your viewing area. One thing you want to do is make sure you check your area for any fire ant mounds before the night of the event. Last thing you want is people coming in, putting blankets down and finding fire ants a few minutes later.

Know your Viewing Area
Next thing you want to do is if you are in a grassy area, make sure the grass is short, so that people people coming in do feel comfortable putting their blankets in the grass. If you’re in a parking lot or another hard top surface, remind your audience to bring lawn chairs. Also make sure that you ask them to bring low back lawn chairs so they don’t block the person in front and behind them.

Preparing the Movie Viewing Area
Also make sure that are any overhead lights that you can turn off, turn those off. People don’t want to actually be in a spotlight while watching the movie and it will help the image quality on the screen a little bit as well. Also, make sure if there are any water sprinklers in your area, whether it be grass or if you are in a parking lot the grass nearby Last thing you want is water sprinklers coming on during the middle of the movie. It has happened a couple times to our company, you really don’t want it.

Picking A Movie For Outdoor Movie Event

Posted by Paul Murray on Thursday May 17, 2012 Under Tips

Today I want to talk to you about picking your movie for your outdoor movie event. When picking a movie, you should not pick a favorite necessarily, but a movie that will appeal to your entire crowd.

Know the content of your movie.
Some movies that you may remember seeing as you were younger, may be PG if they were made in the eighties, may contain a lot of cursing, a lot of innuendos and actually some nudity. So make sure you know the content of the movie before you actually show
it.

Offer a choice to your organization, your school, your church, your league, and have them vote on what movie they want to see. When they get a lot more input into the movie they feel part of the event, they’re more than likely going to come out to the event.

Consider theming your event.
An outdoor movie by the pool, known as a dive-in, you could have a movie like Alvin and the Chipmunks’ Chipwrecked. and then theme the movie with tiki torches, and rafts in
the pool, slushy machines.

If you want some more ideas, On theming your outdoor movie event, check out our Pinterest boards.

Also consider matching a movie to the occasion. If you’re doing something for a football league, consider doing a football movie on a football field. Consider doing something like the Blindside or radio, or If you’re doing a baseball theme event, consider doing Field of Dreams and putting it out on a baseball field.

Dive-In Movies: Outdoor Movies By Poolside

Posted by Paul Murray on Wednesday May 16, 2012 Under Event Productions

For so many people, swimming is a treasured summer past time. Why not combine this fun summer tradition with watching a movie? Dive-in movies combine two favorite family traditions to create a fun summer activity the whole family can cool off with.

YMCA’s, communities and Home Owner’s Associations, community pools, water parks, and even backyards are some of the many places where poolside outdoor movie events are hosted. Dive-in movies are typically summer events, but places like aquatics centers with indoor pools can host them all year round.

A poolside movie event is set up much like a traditional outdoor movie event. A large, inflatable movie screen, a powerful sound system, and a projector are used to turn an outdoor venue into a cinema. The only difference with a poolside event is the movie screen is set up near the pool, and rather than sitting on chairs or blankets, movie goers enjoy the experience from tubes, rafts, pool noodles, or poolside lounge chairs.

Like any movie event, the movie choice for a poolside outdoor movie is important. Be sure to choose a movie based on the intended audience. A water themed movie could be an excellent choice for your dive-in movie experience. Movies like Jaws or Pirates of the Caribbean are good selections for an older crowd. For a family friendly event, try Finding Nemo, Flushed Away or Shark Tale.

In addition to a themed movie, serving themed movie snacks is another great way to make the most of the poolside setting. Goldfish, blue Jell-O jigglers cut into fish or shark shapes, or even sandwiches cut into ocean animal shapes make fun, simple refreshments for the whole family. Serve popsicles or frozen drinks to keep everyone cool. You could even rent a Slushy machine to make special summer treats.

Set the scene by decorating for the event. Choose Tiki torches or citronella candles for pretty lighting and to help keep bugs away. Also consider decorating with blue balloons or ocean themed banners or garlands. Spruce up the refreshment table with a brightly colored table cloth, candles or special center pieces.

A splash-in movie makes a great addition to almost any summer get together, whether you are trying to plan an event for your community to get neighbors together, or you are a homeowner trying to plan a get together to remember at your home. You can also add a poolside movie to another special event. End an afternoon birthday party or family reunion with a splash-in movie after dark, or host an end of the school year dive-in movie event.

Summer is all about having fun with family and friends and finding new and exciting ways to stay cool. A pool side outdoor movie event is fun for the whole family. Adults can relax on lounge chairs, and children can enjoy themselves in the pool, floating on inner tubes or noodles.
