Tips to Prepare for Going to an Outdoor Movie Event

Posted by Paul Murray on Monday Apr 30, 2012 Under Event Productions

Summer is almost here, and, if you are lucky, that means it is time to enjoy outdoor movies under the stars. Whether you are headed to a movie in the park in your town, a church movie event, or even a backyard movie night, these tips will help you make the most of an outdoor movie night experience.

First, you will want to arrive early to the event. The movie will start around sundown, so plan to arrive between 30-45 minutes before then. Getting there early will allow time for parking and for securing a spot on the lawn with a great view of the inflatable movie screen.

After you arrive, be sure to use the bathroom before the movie experience begins. The venue might become crowded, making it difficult to make your way to the bathroom in the dark. Before the movie is also the time to think about movie snacks. It is a good idea to bring a snack and water with you. If you would like to purchase concessions at the venue, do so before the movie starts to avoid a long wait. There is always a long line for popcorn at the beginning of a movie.

You will want to bring something comfortable to sit on. Items like chairs, blankets, air mattresses, bean bags and floor pillows are all good choices. If you choose a chair, be sure it is a low back chair so that others sitting behind you can see the inflatable movie screen. Also in consideration of others, be sure to silence your cell phone.

For comfort, be sure to dress appropriately. Summer time outdoor movies can sometimes get into the high 90’s, even at night. For autumn events, bring a jacket. After sunset in the fall, the temperature will drop and may get chilly. Dressing in layers is always a good idea, in case the weather changes during the event. Also be sure to bring bug spray for summer outdoor movie events to avoid uncomfortable bug bites.

Safety is another concern. Be sure to bring a flashlight with you so you can safely find your way to the car after the event. You will also want to make sure to check the area around you for anything that may have fallen out of your pockets.

Many outdoor movie events are family friendly. Sometimes a movie event can be crowded with hundreds, if not thousands, of people. If you have young children in tow, show your children where the projection area is and instruct them to go there if they get lost or can’t find their way back to where you are sitting. The projectionist will most likely have a microphone to make an announcement.

A movie under the stars with friends and family is a wonderful way to spend a warm summer night, or a cool fall or spring evening. Use these simple tips so you can have the best possible outdoor movie experience.

Understanding Dusk and Sundown and How They Effect Outdoor Movie Start Times

Posted by Paul Murray on Tuesday Apr 24, 2012 Under Tips

Choosing a start time is an essential part of the planning process for a successful outdoor movie event. The start time you choose will be partially unique, based on your particular audience and preferences, and also dependent on the equipment being used to present your outdoor movie.

This guide will help you gain a better understanding of outdoor movie start time terms, and how the equipment provided by the outdoor movie production company can have an effect on the success of your event.

Outdoor movie events take place at night, when the dark makes it possible to view a movie as you would in a dark movie theatre. When, exactly, can your event begin, though? The terms dusk and sundown are not always clearly understood. Sundown refers to a time when dark is approaching, but ambient light is still in the sky. The sun is going down, but still in the sky. Dusk, which occurs about thirty minutes following sundown, is when darkness truly falls.

Many movie companies use equipment that requires the client to wait until dusk, or sometimes even later, to begin the movie. The equipment is not theatrical grade, and is made of see-through materials. These types of screens will cause the projector to lose up to 50% of its brightness. As a result, the picture is not as clear, and the movie absolutely must not start until complete darkness falls after dusk.

Southern Outdoor Cinema uses the latest and most advanced inflatable movie screen technology. We use commercial grade movie screens produced by these top manufacturers: Airscreen, OpenAir Cinema, and Epic. The screens are theatrical grade, with highly reflective surfaces, like you would find in a movie theatre. The term Gain Factor is a measure of reflectivity; higher Gain Factors produce brighter images. Our theatrical grade, highly reflective inflatable movie screens, along with our high definition projectors, allow our clients to begin movie nights 5-10 minutes before dusk.

This flexibility in movie start time options comes with a variety of advantages for our clients.

  • First, parents or others organizing child and family friendly events will love being able to start the movie earlier, so children are not up too late.
  • Next, images will be brighter, more colorful, and crisp, creating the ultimate movie experience.
  • Finally, there is a black backing on the back of our high quality screens, so that ambient light will not effect the screen surface as much as it would with a cheap screen without this backing. On a cheaper screen that is not theatrical grade, a light on a building, for example, can show through the screen, making dark scenes difficult to see.

Southern Outdoor Cinema prides itself on offering the highest quality equipment, so that your event can be a success.

Finding The Right Outdoor Movie Company So That You Have A Successful Event

Posted by Paul Murray on Tuesday Apr 17, 2012 Under Tips

Today I want to talk to you about finding the right outdoor movie company so that you may have a succesfful event. First of all you need to know that there are two kinds of companies that produce outdoor movie events:

1.) The first kind of company that produces events are: DJ, Bounce House rental companies, and people who think it showing flicks outdoors is fun as a side businesses to their actual full time employment. These kind of companies typically hire people with now particular skill set to work their outdoor movie events.

Typically these kind of outdoor movie providers carry no insurance, or say they
have insurance
, but it does not cover outdoor movie event productions.

Equipment from these kind of providers are inexpensive, usually not commercial grade (but rather equipment ment for personal use) or that is underpowered for an outdoor movie setting. Their equipment is really ment for indoor movie events.

2.) The second type of company that produces outdoor movie events are full time businesses that specialize only in outdoor cinema productions. Outdoor movie production companies will use theatrical grade screen surfaces, professional grade video and audio sound systems. Cinema production companies equipment include HD digital projectors and high definition sound systems.

Employees of professional cinema companies typically have background in working with stage and audio-visual equipment and often work in the film industry.

Full time outdoor cinema productions companies will carry General Liability Insurance for EXACTLY what they do which is outdoor movie events.

Southern Outdoor Cinema is a company that fits into the second category of outdoor movie providers. We are a professional outdoor cinema company that specializes in outdoor movie productions.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR HIRING AN OUTDOOR MOVIE COMPANY. ASK THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS..

Do you carry insurance and how much insurance do you carry?
Request a copy of the provider’s insurance and call the insurance agency listed on the paper. Find out if the business is covered for outdoor movie events or is the provider list as something else, such as a realtor.

How do I obtain a movie license?
BEWARE of an outdoor movie company that tells you do NOT need a movie license for outdoor movie events in public. These providers are asking you to break copyright laws. Via copyright laws all outdoor movie showings require a public performance license to be purchased, except for events shown in your backyard for personal use.

What brand of screen do you use?
Currently there are only three professional manufacturers of inflatable movie screens: AIRSCREEN, Open Air Cinema and EPIC. If a provider can not name their equipment then they do not know alot about what they are doing. The brand of screen that is use will effect both the presentation of your movie and safety of your event.

What type of screen surface are you using?
Professional grade screen surfaces will use theatrical grade surfaces, just like in the movie theater. Quality of the screen is measured in gain. Screen surfaces should be highly reflective so to produce a bright and colorful picture image. Big-box store and inexpensive screens will have a cloth or plastic surface that is see thru and not very reflective which will produce a dull or poor image quality.

What type of sound and projection are you using?
Most companies will claim they are using state-of-the-art audio or video, but when was it state-of-the-art? Equipment that was top quality 5 years ago, is not top quality today.

Do you maintaining your projectors? Are you changing the projector bulbs regularly?
Bulbs that are not changed in projectors will get dull over time and effect the image quality at your show.

How do you measure your screen size?
Is one companies 50′ screen the same as another companies 35′ screen? Do they measure the screen surface or frame. Are they measuring their inflatable movie screen on the diagnol, width or height. These are important questions to ask when comparing screen systems.

Can you provide references for the last 3 events you produced?
Professional outdoor movie providers should be able to provide references of the last three shows that they produce, not just a select list of references that may be old. Also ask to see pictures of actual events that company has produced.

Southern Outdoor Cinema recently brought the magic of the drive-in movie on location to a college campus during spring fling week. Here is how Southern Outdoor Cinema used the latest in inflatable movie screen technology to create an unforgettable drive-in movie experience right in the parking lot of this college campus.

Our crew transformed an ordinary parking lot into a drive-in movie theatre for just one night. SOC used a huge, inflatable movie screen, a monster sound system, and an FM transmitter to create the ultimate drive-in movie experience for students, with clear picture and sound. Students who sat on chairs or walked past the area were able to see and hear the movie clearly on the huge screen, and hear it through our monster sound system. Others were able to enjoy an authentic drive-in movie experience by tuning their car radios in and listening through the FM transmitter.

Southern Outdoor Cinema uses AIRSCREEN brand screens, the world’s leader in inflatable movie screen technology. These screens feature a highly reflective surface that offers a picture just like you would enjoy in an actual movie theatre. These technologically advanced screens, along with HD projectors, allowed us to present video on the screen long before dusk, while other providers must wait until 20-40 minutes after sundown to begin displaying images on their screens.

Our AIRSCREEN inflatable movie screen made it possible for the client to display several student made videos before the featured movie. The movie was then able to begin right at sundown. These screens and projectors make it possible for events to begin earlier, so students can enjoy the event and still return to their dorms before curfew.

By using the latest and greatest inflatable movie screen technology available, Southern Outdoor Cinema is able to transform an ordinary place like a parking lot on a college campus into an amazing, on location, drive-in movie theatre. The advanced screens, projectors, and sound system we use give our clients an edge when it comes to hosting unforgettable movie events.

How To Make Money Selling Popcorn At An Outdoor Movie Event

Posted by Paul Murray on Friday Apr 13, 2012 Under Tips

Movies and popcorn go hand-in-hand. This is why popcorn is a great way to make money at your outdoor movie event. Here is what to keep in mind so you can make the most of selling popcorn at your outdoor movie concession stand.

Bags of Popcorn at an outdoor movie event

Popcorn Machine Placement
Many people already enjoy popcorn with a movie, but smart placement strategies can help you increase popcorn sales even more. First, choose the best location for your popcorn popper. Make sure the event attendees can see and smell the popcorn by placing the machine in the front of the movie viewing area, or to the side of the movie screen. Be sure not to place the popcorn machine behind the audience, since they will be more likely to buy the popcorn if they can see and smell it.

Another great way to increase visibility is to illuminate the popcorn by keeping the machine’s light on. A central location for the machine and proper illumination will make it hard to miss the delicious sight and smell of the popcorn.

Popcorn Popper Appearance
Create a clean and inviting appearance to make the popcorn more appealing. Event attendees will steer clear if the machine is dirty. Be sure to clean the popcorn popper properly after every event to keep it sanitary and increase popcorn sales.

Keep the machine moderately full so that there is an attractive display of popped popcorn. Be sure to pop the popcorn during working hours, and keep the doors open during popping so that stream does not fog up the windows. Be sure to keep the popcorn hot, however, following popping so you can serve customers fresh, hot popcorn to enjoy with the movie.

Containers
Choose the best containers for your popcorn. Try to avoid paper bag containers. It is difficult to display popcorn in paper bags, and serving it this way is also more time consuming since the bags will need to be opened before they can be filled. Popcorn boxes are generally a much better alternative. Offer a large size popcorn box so two people can share.

More Tips to keep in Mind
In addition to popcorn, consider offering a variety of drinks including bottled water and soda at your concession stand. Popcorn makes people thirsty, so offering drinks is a good idea. Attendees will be happy there are beverages available, and you will enjoy additional revenue from the drink sales. Be sure to also highlight the fact that popcorn is a much healthier alternative to candy, another popular movie snack.

Popcorn is a very important part of a movie concession stand. Give your popcorn machine an appropriate spot and place it up front in your concession stand, rather than on a back shelf. This simple change will increase your sales by 30-50%.
