Urban Renewal With Outdoor Movies

Posted by Paul Murray on Thursday Feb 23, 2012 Under Event Productions, Movie Articles

The idea behind urban renewal efforts is to breathe new life into downtown areas that have seen neglect over the years, and to bring people back into these areas. Goals typically include drawing crowds into downtown areas, supporting local business and fostering a connection to the community and its success. Those in charge of planning events as part of redevelopment plans have been turning to outdoor movie events as a creative and effective way to help reach these goals.

Outdoor Movie in a Downtown Setting

In the early 90′s, city planners looking for a way to bring crowds into neglected downtown areas became intrigued with the idea of hosting outdoor movie events. Portable, inflatable movie screens and cinema equipment became available for rent, making these events practical and more affordable.

Outdoor movie events can be funded in a variety of ways. Some areas receive redevelopment grants to aid in urban renewal efforts that can be put toward movie event production costs, or local businesses might be willing to sponsor the event. Local businesses that agree to sponsor this type of event will benefit in a couple of ways; advertising as part of the sponsorship agreement will get their business name out there, and crowds that come into the area might decide to make purchases from some of the local businesses. Vendors can sell movie snacks like popcorn to bring in revenue and create a better cinema experiene.

With smart advertising, both residents of the immediate area and residents of surrounding areas will be drawn to an outdoor movie event. Young families will look forward to an evening of affordable, family friendly fun, and the older crowd will be drawn in by the nostalgic aspect of this type of an event. With the decline in the popularity and success of traditional drive-in movie theatres comes a desire to re-create the fond memories created when drive-in movies were so popular.

After a successful event, local residents will leave with a positive feeling about their community, hopefully feeling more connected to the city and its successful redevelopment. Residents of surrounding areas who attended the event might decide to come back and check out the area again, hopefully bringing sales to local businesses.

Movie screenings can be a one time event , or a series of movie nights can be put on. Summer is a great time for an outdoor movie series since the weather is usually warm, and children are typically out of school. Local residents will enjoy fun summer nights spent under the stars with friends and family, and visitors traveling during the summer months might pass by and decide to see what’s going on, bringing new business to the area.

The keys to success when hosting an event or events aimed at assisting in the redevelopment of an urban area are to attract crowds including locals and those from surrounding areas; and to create a good vibe about the area that will leave locals feeling connected to their community and draw in more business from surrounding areas. An outdoor movie or series of movie nights make a great addition to a city’s urban renewal plans.

How To Host An Unforgettable Backyard Outdoor Movie Night

Posted by Paul Murray on Saturday Feb 11, 2012 Under Event Productions

Have you ever wanted to re-live the experience of a summer night spent at a drive-in movie? A backyard movie event is the perfect chance to enjoy a movie under the stars with friends and family, without even needing to leave the comfort of your own yard. Here is how to create an unforgettable movie event in your own backyard.

Theme
What type of event do you want to host? A date night to celebrate an Anniversary, a neighborhood block party, a birthday, family reunion or graduation are just a few occasions you can celebrate with a backyard movie night. A regular family film night can even be made extra special by making it into a backyard movie night with an inflatable movie screen.

Pick the Movie
Once you decide on the type of event you want to host and the guest list, you can choose an appropriate film. If you are celebrating a birthday or graduation, let the honoree choose the movie. For a romantic date night, choose a favorite romantic film. If you are having kids at your backyard movie night, be sure to choose a family friendly movie.

Equipment
Once you have decided on a motion-picture, it is time to make a budget and get in contact with a local outdoor movie production company. Many audio / visual production companies work with a wide variety of clients; from individuals who wish to host a small event at their home, to clients who need huge inflatable movie screens to accommodate thousands of guests.

The outdoor cinema production company you choose should have a screen size just right for your backyard flick night. The company should also be able to provide you with a projector and sound equipment to make your movie night an unforgettable, stress free experience much like a drive-in movie or movie theatre.

Food
It’s not movie night without food. You have several options here. You might make your movie night a potluck and ask everyone to bring a favorite movie snack to share, or you might provide snacks or a light meal like popcorn, hot dogs or movie theatre style candy. To really get the drive-in movie experience, you might even consider renting concession equipment like a popcorn or hot dog machine. You could keep the snacks simple or have a little more fun with it. Consider themed snacks to go with your film; chocolate to go with “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” or a meatball appetizer with “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”.

Set the Scene
Decorating and setting up your yard are other areas you can have some fun. Use lighting like Tiki torches or even Christmas lights to set a pretty scene and make it safer for guests to walk around in the dark. Consider heading to a local party store or putting your craft skills to good use and setting up themed decorations to compliment your movie. Lanterns, for example, would add an extra special touch to a “Tangled” backyard movie night. If you have a pool, a poolside movie is just right for a hot summer night. You might host a late afternoon pool party and barbeque, followed by a relaxing poolside movie night.

Seating
There are several ways to set up the seating for your movie night. For kids, blankets or bean bags are a fun choice. Adults might prefer chairs or comfortable cushions. If you do not have enough chairs for all of your guests, you could either rent chairs or ask guests to bring a favorite chair. Consider low chairs like beach chairs so that everyone can see the movie.

Whatever the size, theme or reason for your backyard movie night; taking the time to carefully plan the details, decorate and choose the perfect movie will help ensure your movie night is one that will leave you and your guests with special memories.

The library is a place for people of all ages to gather, read and enjoy the company of other community members. It can be difficult at times to create excitement in the community about the library and what is has to offer, and to encourage new visitors. Libraries often seek ways to encourage community members to visit the library and read by hosting events and featuring reading programs where all of the patrons involved in the program read the same book or books, and sometimes get together after reading to discuss the book.

A fun twist on a traditional book club is to pair a reading program with an outdoor movie event. A book that has been adapted to film can be read and then all members can gather at the close of the program for a showing of the film. A discussion of the book and the film, and of the similarities and differences between the book and the movie will make an interesting end to the fun evening.

There are a variety of book to film projects coming up in 2012 and 2013. For children, The Lorax, Adventures of TinTin and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will make excellent choices for children’s reading groups and movie events. For adults, film adaptations of the popular books The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Water for Elephants and The Hobbit will be coming out in the next year or two.

An event to celebrate an author’s birthday is another way to bring people into the library. For example, Dr. Seuss’s birthday could be celebrated by showing a film adaptation of one of his books, such as Horton Hears a Who or The Cat In The Hat.

Bookstores might also consider hosting an outdoor movie event featuring a film adaptation of a popular book. The event will serve as a great marketing tactic for the bookstore, as it will draw in crowds and possibly even encourage sales of the book being shown in film version.

An inflatable movie screen can be placed almost anywhere to create an outdoor cinema experience at a library or bookstore. The parking lot, a grass area or even inside the building can be easily transformed for the evening. A variety of screen sizes can accommodate any group.

New inflatable move screen technology is now available to make hosting an indoor event more enjoyable.
New blower-less inflatable movie screens help create a superior indoor movie event with no noise to detract from the movie experience. Although an outdoor movie under the stars is a wonderful experience, sometimes issues like inclement weather or inadequate outdoor space make hosting an indoor movie event more practical.

Many libraries are trying new ways to encourage community members to visit the library and read more. Bookstores are always looking for ways to bring in new customers and encourage sales. An outdoor (or indoor) movie event featuring a film adaptation of a book is a unique way to get people excited about their local library or bookstore, and reading

5 Movies to Watch During Black History Month

Posted by Paul Murray on Friday Feb 3, 2012 Under Movie Articles

Black History Month is a time to remember important events in Black history and to celebrate important people and achievements. There are a variety of great films to choose from that are inspirational, emotional, entertaining and sometimes eye-opening. These five films are all excellent choices to watch and celebrate Black History Month.

1. The Blind Side

The Blind Side is a partly biographical film based on the life of Michael Oher, an NFL player. The film tells the story of his difficult childhood, and his life with the white family that later takes him in. He begins playing football in high school and eventually gets recruited to play for the University of Mississippi. The is an emotionally powerful film that tells the story of a strong and successful black man and those who care about him.

2. The Express

The Express tells the story of Ernie Davis, the first black man to win the Heisman trophy. Ernie Davis is recruited by Syracuse university and is immediately successful. Following a successful tenure at Syracuse University, Davis wins the Heisman trophy and goes on to the NFL. Sadly, he dies at the very young age of 23 from leukemia. Throughout the film Ernie Davis faces the discrimination and hate that was so prevalent at the time; like when he and other black players were not welcome at the award banquet following the team’s win at the Cotton Bowl Classic.

3. Glory

Glory is a war film that features the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. This unit was the first Army unit comprised completely of black men. The film follows this unit’s experiences during the Civil War. Their Captain, Robert Shaw, was instrumental in the success of the unit and insisted that his men be deployed to combat situations.

4. Glory Road

Glory Road chronicles another first in American sports history. This film tells the story of the Texas Western College 1966 men’s basketball team. This team was the first college basketball team with an entirely black starting line up to win the NCAA Division l Basketball Championship.

5. The Great Debaters

is a powerful film based on a debate team at Wiley College during the 1930′s. The film chronicles the debate team coach’s efforts to lead his debate team to success in an environment of extreme hate and violence. Jim Crow laws and lynching were a major part of this time period. In the film the team beats Harvard in a debate; a monumental success.
